Overcoming Writer’s Block
Strategies and Inspiration for Overcoming Writer’s Block

As writers, we all suffer from writer’s block. It may be more frequent for some of us and rarer for the rest.
When you are suffering from writer’s block it feels like you just can’t move forward. No topic is good enough to write about, your mind feels foggy and there are no sources to use.
The bottom line is that you feel stuck and moving forward seems like it is never going to happen.
How do you overcome writer’s block?
Exercising
Whenever I am out of ideas it always helps me to exercise. Whenever I am at the gym lifting weights it seems like I get the most ideas. The ideas come to me so effortlessly and during a session I can come up with three to four topic ideas.
I am not saying you have to lift weights, but get your ass moving. Go for a run, go boxing, ride your bicycle. Sitting and staring at the wall is never going to overcome your writer’s block.
At the same time exercising has been proven to both stimulate and develop parts of the brain according to reviewstudio.com. One part of the brain that exercising helps develop is the hippocampus. The more you exercise the more developed the hippocampus becomes and the more you remember. As a result, you have more topics to pick from in your memory bank.
Hobbies
When you are suffering from writer’s block it often helps to engage with different activities other than writing. Solving a problem is often easier when you step away from it for some time and then come back with fresh ideas.
Therefore you need to find something like hiking, painting or another fun activity. I understand some of the hobbies like hiking take loads of planning and cost money. Therefore you need to find a hobby that is easily accessible and cheap.
Having hobbies that are cheap, accessible and fun will help you with your writer’s block. Trust me after or during the activity you will come up with new ideas.
Drafts
Drafting a potential article beforehand can be a lifesaver. Get a notebook and a pen and get to work. I usually start by writing a few potential topics and titles down as bullet points.
Once I have decided upon a topic I start structuring my article. Write down a few bullet points underneath the title displaying what you are going to write about.
For example:
Title: Overcoming Writer’s Block
- Exercising
- Hobbies
- Drafts
Using this structure can help you overcome writer’s block. Having too many things on your mind is very stressful and annoying. Therefore it is best to get them out onto a paper.
You don’t have to use my draft method. It is perfectly fine to come up with your method for creating drafts. Just make sure to get your thoughts out of your head, because having too many things on your mind will cause you to forget.
Read
Reading is a useful tool to overcome writer’s block as well. While reading you will get inspiration from other writers and get your mind off writing at the same time. You can read other articles here on Medium, a book, or a newspaper.
I employ this method sometimes when I encounter writer’s block. It is not as effective as exercising, but it is still a useful tool in my belt.
Conclusion
My advice is to try all of these methods and find new ones. There is no set method for overcoming writer’s block. I have just supplied you with a mini roadmap to overcoming it.
Start by exercising, engaging in fun activities, employing a draft format, and reading books or medium articles, newspapers, or anything written by an author in your niche.
