At the age of 12, she fled her home to Alexandria and lived a life of great sin for 17 years. Upon attempting to view the Holy Cross, a miraculous event occurred, preventing her from entering the church. Saint Mary repented, dedicating herself to the Holy Theotokos, and was led into the desert. There, she repented and fasted for 47 years, manifesting profound transformation through miracles. Saint Mary of Egypt serves as a poignant reminder during Lent of God’s mercy, forgiveness, and the nature of repentance.
Understanding Human Sexuality in the Context of God’s Design
In contemporary times, confusion surrounds human sexuality. While procreation is the primary purpose in the animal kingdom, human sexuality extends beyond mere reproduction. Sex within marriage is blessed, reflecting the mysterious union of Christ with His church. Distinct from animal instincts, human sexuality within marriage holds a higher purpose. Conversely, sex outside of marriage defiles the body and spirit, tarnishing the sacred representation of Christ’s love for His church.
Differentiating the Contexts of Sexual Conduct
Drawing a parallel with the battlefield, where killing in wartime differs from peacetime, Saint Paul, in his letter to the Hebrews, emphasizes the blessing within the marriage bed. Sex outside of marriage defiles both body and spirit, undermining the sacred image of Christ’s union with His church. Christ’s teachings set a higher standard, delving beyond external actions into the heart’s condition. Thus, purifying the heart becomes essential, resisting societal influences that exploit and manipulate our passions.

Church fathers underscore the link between gluttony, excessive sleep, a lack of self-control, and the stirring up of sexual passions. Excessive alcohol consumption also stimulates carnal desires. While controlling these bodily aspects is crucial, humility emerges as the root solution. Humility acknowledges our dependence on God’s grace, recognizing our inability to face these challenges alone. Even in victory, humility reminds us not to grow complacent but to maintain vigilance in our ongoing struggle against passions.

Humility is the key to mastering passions, extending beyond fasting, abstinence, and self-discipline. Even victories must be embraced with humility, as God allows challenges to humble us. God favors a humble defeat over a proud victory. Maintaining the struggle, regardless of apparent defeats or victories, is crucial. Like the dedicated soldier facing overwhelming odds, we must fight to the end, knowing that God honors perseverance. Repentance, illustrated by Saint Mary of Egypt’s 47-year journey, calls for continual struggle and unwavering hope. In all things, God works for our salvation, guiding, strengthening, and humbling us on our spiritual journey.
