Over-Confident Teen takes on Swamp Road

How one Young Minded 16 year old ruins his entire family in seconds.

Tragedy

As a paramedic for fifteen years straight, this man had seen sights no man should see. One particular story stuck with him. With goosebumps running down my neck, I will tell you the story that significantly impacted my thinking as a young adult. It gave me a profound sense of certainty that I wished this upon no one. This story is an excellent reminder to everyone that we all might need once in and while. Accidents happen; read on to find how just how devastating one little mistake can be.

The Curse of Swamp Road

Many accidents occur on this particular road. It is known for its dangerous swampy edges.

It was getting late one evening, and a young man, merely sixteen, decides to have a hoot and a couple of drinks at a party. All the while thinking he could handle the impairment. When the young man drove home, he had to travel a notorious road everyone called swamp road.

The road was rippled with the slug and puddles of murky deep shoulders. It was a road made through the swamp, as its name suggests. As such, this young man knew this road well, travelling many times in the past. His half cut confidence was shining through the headlights when he thinks he spots something on the road ahead. As an inexperienced driver would, he maneuvered the vehicle slightly. However so, did he make such a grave mistake? The young man's car tore quickly from the roadway off the sharp shoulder, flipping his vehicle into the swampy waters of the edge of the road.

Rescued Just In Time

Within minutes a traveller came to the finding that a vehicle was flipped in the ditch. He was drowning. A rescue team was dispatch, and the boy heroically rescued. It wasn’t but hours later both his mother and his father were notified that the young man had been submerged under the water not long enough to kill him, just enough so that this poor boy would be a “vegetable” for the remainder of his life.

Father

My paramedic friend said he knew the mother and father well. After the family, including the older brother, came to terms with the situation, finance and arguments plagued this now broken home. The father and mother succumb to divorce, and the father fell ill from the stress and suffered an unexpected heart attack after the divorce. He was then crippled from not being able to work. Costly medical expenses put the father into deep debt. He was in denial and horror of the whole situation.

Mother

The mother never smoked a day in her life. Emotionally battered and in pain in every sense of the word, she downsized her life to a mobile home and became a regular at her local bar. Moneyless and depressed, the mother and father had issues with the older son. First, he aspired to go to college, but after the accident with his little brother, he helped his parents out with the selling of their home. He lost his mom and dad in a sense because they were a happy family just a few years earlier. They had lived in a gorgeous home; they didn’t fight. They had money. There was nothing to complain about.

Older Brother

One night my paramedic friend got a call on his personal phone.

In a calm voice, the mother of the boy who flipped his car on swamp road asked if he could please get ambulance services. She wasn’t distressed as much as monotone and dull. My friend explained to me that he went with an ambulance crew to see what was going on. When he arrived on the scene, the mother was sitting, with her hand on her head, elbow on the table, smoking a cigarette. She pointed inwards towards the hallway. They began to slowly approach. The bathroom was located in the hallway, and there was one room on either side. He knew where to look next after a quiet peek in the rooms and a hauler to the mother. My friend opened the bathroom door finding the oldest brother had taken his life. It was heartbreaking to witness. Probably hard for my friend to tell me the details, still doing so. But it was a very horrific act of desperation, a fatal decision on the brother’s part. Another young life was taken because of the horrible accident with his brother just a few short years earlier. If only the younger brother had not drank that night.

Cancer Taking Mom

More to my point, the mother came to cancer less than a year later, cancer she had no predisposition for, nor did she have poor health of any kind. It was suggested that the stress and dismay could have brought on the deadly disease that had taken her life as well.

Trauma Taking Dad

Then there was the father who still dearly loved his family. He was so distraught he took his own life after the other three. His beautiful wife and two sons were gone. The young man, only 16 years old, genuinely taking the lives of his family alongside his poor immature decision to drive impaired.

Conclusion

I pray this gets read by many people. I am sharing the story of how a few bad decisions can destroy lives. The only one left alive was the young man who became a vegetable. He remains in care at a long-term facility.

The 16 year old was 27 before making a slight improvement and becoming cognitive enough so to find out what happened to his family. Now trapped inside himself he is truly dead but lives on to regret his mistakes for what is stemming to be a long life.
