How Much I Earned in my Second Month with the Medium Partner Program
Let’s see if we can make some cents out of it
First of all, let me say how much of a fan I am of this new “list” feature in what I call the “Mediumverse”!
The following list contains every story I’ve written thus far about making money and writing on Medium:
Soon I will write another story with more tips and revelations to share, especially since Natasha Nichole Lake told me that she gained a lot from my last story on this topic. I was inspired by her page as well.
Learning and growing together, as creators and people, is one of my favorite things about writing and publishing on this platform.
Second of all, let me state that I have never earned money from my writing, aside from a little money I made from a book I self-published 15 years ago, which I sold as merchandise while performing music.
A month after the Medium Writing Challenge, I became curious to see how much I could make if I wrote and published a story every day for 1 year.
I knew that, at the very least, writing every day would make me a better writer, which it already has!
However, I didn’t expect to clear $100 in my first month.
I have read many stories about the challenges of making more than $100 on Medium.
Here’s my strategy:
It is a combination of increasing my opportunities to earn money by publishing interesting pieces that enough people want to read, and good ol’ fashioned, completely out of our control luck.
Alan Asnen and I like to discuss this aspect of luck that makes some excellent writers, or people in general, “successful” and others not so.
It’s exciting not to know!
It will remain a mystery to me why some stories get more attention and earn more money than others, and that is perfectly fine with me.
I’ve never bet on horse races before, but that’s what it’s like for me to see the changes in how my stories perform over the course of a month.
For example, my top earning story, published on October 3rd, was still going strong and in the lead the first half of November.
Then, up from 4th place, came this one, which was published October 8th.
I didn’t do anything special to promote it. Both stories have been pinned on my profile at various times, but by some stroke of luck, this story crushed the competition.
It was distributed, but look (especially for those who think curation is important) how long it took for it to gain any traction.
Another story that’s been somewhat of a “slow burn” is this one:
It was published on October 14th and has slowly, but continuously climbed the charts again this month.
It finished out October in 4th place.
For the month of November, it JUST overtook the one below it (about the porn site) yesterday to finish in 4th place this month, again.

Some people think that writing and publishing daily on Medium will cause earnings to consistently double.
I would love that to be true.
