Summary

A retail employee at Plinkett and Price's department store recounts a humorous misunderstanding with a male customer interested in lingerie for himself, leading to a new friendship and an educational journey into crossdressing, while also discussing the latest news and writing prompts for the "Tantalizing Tales" publication.

Abstract

The narrative begins with the employee's enthusiasm for the retail industry and her eagerness to use her staff discount for high-end lingerie. She encounters a male customer browsing the lingerie section and offers assistance, initially assuming he is shopping for someone else. Additionally, the text provides updates on Medium's platform changes, such as the introduction of 'topics' and the ability for writers to receive 'tips' from readers, and it highlights stories from previous prompts, emphasizing the diversity and talent of the publication's contributing writers.

Our Wires got Crossed when he Admired my Satin Lingerie

Newsletter & prompt #4: A misunderstanding leads to a new friendship

After working at Plinkett and Price’s department store for just a month, I knew I loved the retail industry. I couldn’t wait to use my staff discount to purchase some of the high end lingerie from the department in which I worked.

Early on, I’d had training on assisting male customers shopping for the women in their life, so when I saw the tall guy with the floppy chestnut hair browsing our racks of scanty lace and satin underwear sets, I fixed on my prettiest smile and went to offer guidance.

“These are very stylish,” I beamed at him, “you have great taste.”

“Thank you,” he smiled, and barely blushed.

I pressed on, “D’you know what size you need?”

“Hmm, not really, I may need your help.”

I turned at a slight angle to him and stood in a way that displayed my figure, the curve of my hips, the swell of my modest C cup breasts.

“Is the person you’re buying for larger than me, or smaller?” I asked with a steady gaze.

He looked at me appreciatively, not in a lecherous way; we have discerning customers at Plinkett and Price.

“Ahh –” Then he lowered his eyes, but brought them back up to mine with a devastating smile.

“Could you get your measuring tape?” He asked me, “I’m buying them for myself.”

I missed a beat, but that was only because I could imagine his taut body in these dainty garments. How the eyelash lace of the balconette bra would barely conceal his neat, mocha nipples; while the garter belt which matched the Brazilian style, high-leg knickers, would frame a tempting package at the apex of his smooth, shaved thighs.

“I’d be delighted to assist,” I beamed. “Why not point out your favourite fabrics, so when I’ve measured you, I can fetch the right size. Let’s start by taking you to a changing room.”

My misunderstanding led to a fascinating and fun afternoon. Since then, I’ve gone out of my way to learn about crossdressing, and Alistair (but I may call him Alice) has become my best customer.

Prompt

There’s a pinch of truth to this story, as there often is in my fiction, and the prompt for this month is hiding in plain sight: Misunderstanding(s)

Write something tantalizing for us about getting the wrong end of the stick, or not being on the same page as someone else. Sometimes a misunderstanding comes from confusion, other times it’s the result of jumping to a conclusion.

We are hoping for some varied stories in all our usual genres, please remember our prompts are evergreen, so you can write for any or all of them this month.

But remember to let us know, when submitting your story to Tantalizing Tales, that it is a response to a prompt by including a note or adding the theme to your kicker or subtitle.

News

Medium is now calling ‘tags’ ‘topics’ — to help us file your story about a Misunderstanding on our site, why not use it as a topic?

Another new feature on Medium is the facility for writers to earn ‘tips’ from our readers. I followed the steps set out by Robert Ralph. For this to work on your profile, you need a way for people to pay, such as a Ko-fi or Paypal account — it can’t be your stripe account.
