Outgoing and Fun Server

We’ve been occasionally coming into the restaurant at the travel center to eat what is usually our only meal of the day these last couple of weeks. A couple of times that we’ve been in there, we’ve been greeted by a very outgoing, funny, friendly, and fun-loving server.

She is tall and skinny with long blonde hair. She’s only about a decade or so older than I am and she has worked at the travel center restaurant for the last 20 plus years. This town of Erie is so small. We had just met someone a few months ago who has been staying at the motel we had previously been staying at who used to work at this very same travel center with the server in the restaurant.

Coincidences in a Small Town

The reason I bring this up is that we were all in the same place at the same time the other day. Circumstance led to our motel friend seeing our truck and then mentioning the people she used to work with at the travel center and our blonde friend came up in conversation. We all walked in and had a chance to talk to her and figure out how we all knew each other.

Previous Mentions

She was also the other server in the story I wrote about in the Valentine’s Day receipt story. She wasn’t the main character but she is briefly brought up as someone in the story. Our new server friend was becoming more and more a part of our story of being in a holding pattern now as of late. She joked with me the other day after she found out that I wrote a story about her coworker that she wanted me to write one about her.

Stay A Little Longer

The inspiration at the time just wasn’t there yet. This feeling obviously wouldn’t last very long. She’s very friendly, talkative, and encouraging to us every time we come in after we think we’re going to leave. She’s even said as recently as this morning that she doesn’t want to see us leave. We’ve been so good for the business of the overall travel center and the restaurant that she wouldn’t mind at all if we delayed our trip.

Breakfast Conversations and Big Appetite

We had a chance to hang out all morning for breakfast today. Our sleep had been thrown off. This morning we got to wake up earlier than normal. We were up at a decent time and already hungry. My appetite was especially big today and we had our friendly and hilarious server to greet us today. This was going to be a great morning. We both had big breakfasts this morning. My partner and I both ordered steak breakfasts with all of the sides. We wanted to be full for all of the work we’re planning to complete on our truck today.

We’re ready to go on the road and the weather is beautiful today. We went back and forth all morning. I even engaged with many of the other restaurant guests who were passing through today. I had my coffee. I was feeling alive. I was feeling like engaging with everyone, particularly with our new friend.

Meeting the Family

Then inspiration struck me at the moment. She said that she wanted us to meet her kids. She has three grown kids in their 20s and she wanted to show us pictures. I knew right at this moment that I had found the idea for the story that she has previously mentioned to me before.

Her youngest daughter is a cop. She showed me a picture of her with her ex-girlfriend first and then a picture of her in her uniform. I smiled widely and my partner and I both mentioned how pretty she is and how much she looks like her mom. Then she showed us her two older boys. One was with a child and was a young, handsome man. The other one was a singer. He sang in a short video at a church with no one inside. I noticed how twangy and deep his voice was and showed a great appreciation of his talent.

Realization

It was amazing. In a matter of a few minutes, we met her family. I was very happy and I felt privileged to be a part of this special moment. I had realized that her daughter had looked familiar to me. I realized that she was in the travel center occasionally and that I had seen her yesterday when my partner and I were in there. I had already met her, in a sense. This was essentially a reintroduction to her.

We also got to see a picture of her husband. The two of them looked so adorable and happy together. I got to meet the whole family. My partner and I got a chance to bond and have a long, friendly conversation with the server with which we’ve had plenty of meetings in the last couple of weeks. It was nice to get a moment and have a closer glance at her personal life.

Feeling a Connection and Leaving for the Windy City

She felt comfortable enough to introduce us to her family. I was very excited and genuinely thrilled to be a part of it. I know we’re leaving for Chicago but I know for certain with the events of the last couple of weeks and being stuck at a travel center that I’ll certainly remember her and the moments we had a chance to connect with her. She’s definitely one of the biggest highlights of our time here before we go back to the Windy City.
