Our Seeking of “Enlightenment” Is Often Based on Seeking Perfection
This Can Hinder You From Ever Truly Living in the Moment
We start on this path with the best of intentions, seeking growth, understanding, and peace. Often, life puts us on this path by showing us glimpses of the pure state of being. After we lose that state, we search and search and search on how to find this state again.
And here’s the twist: this search can often keep us from truly experiencing the richness of the present moment.

I’ve been thinking over this concept lately, and I’ve come to realize that our pursuit of enlightenment could (for many of us) be a disguised search for perfection. I don’t say this state doesn’t exist, I say that even the search after it can be illusionary.

We often think of enlightenment as reaching a peak of understanding, a place where we’re untouched by the ups and downs of life.
But is this realistic, or even desirable? In my journey, I’ve started to see that this quest for an ideal state is a bit like chasing a mirage.
It looks beautiful from a distance, but as you get closer, you realize it’s just an illusion.

So What Is Enlightenment Then?
Can you find the center of your center without actually searching much for it?
It’s always here, you don’t even have to search much, you have to be it.
You already are it.
Life is messy, unpredictable, and sometimes downright difficult. Seeking a state of perfection can lead us to reject these aspects of our existence.
We might find ourselves constantly striving for a future state of enlightenment, without ever really engaging with the life we have right now.
We’re all human, after all. We laugh, we cry, we fall, we rise. Our pursuit of enlightenment should not strip us of these human experiences but deepen them. It should not take us away from life but bring us closer to its essence, in all its messy, beautiful glory.

My Personal Experiences.
In my experience, the more I’ve sought this perfect state of enlightenment, the more I’ve missed out on the small, imperfect, but beautiful moments that make up my day-to-day life.
It’s like being so focused on finding a treasure chest that you walk past a field of wildflowers without even noticing them.
What if it’s about learning to dance in the rain, rather than waiting for the storm to pass?
This shift in perspective has been a game changer for me.
It’s helped me move away from constantly seeking and instead focus on being — being present, being engaged, being truly alive in the here and now.
I am also still learning to let go of the idea of perfection. Learning to appreciate where I actually am, not where I want to be.
Really arriving here, on earth, in this present time, at this present moment.
Let us not miss that by looking to far ahead.

Now to You, How Can You Integrate This Understanding?
Yes, you may still need the search to grow, to let go and to find. But who says you can’t enjoy and keep the wonder through every moment of the journey, without fixating the end goal so firmly?

I hope you can take some insights with you.
I certainly did. Many of my blog posts are about things that are actually part of my life, and by writing down my thoughts, I can find something that wasn’t that clear before and learn from it.
Let’s walk this path with openness, curiosity, and a heart that’s willing to embrace the imperfect perfection of life itself. Join me on this journey.
