LOVE NOTES

Our Present’s Past

Is doomed to be our future

Social commentary was generally the domain of the folk genre in the 1960s. Yet, on rare occasions, the lines were blurred between folk and rock, and the refrain seeped into the psychedelic era.

In 1971, Alvin Lee and the British rock band Ten Years After recorded a song that resonates just as loudly fifty years later. It speaks to the ineptitude of the silent majority who wait for others to do their bidding.

You would think that after half a century of social unrest we would have moved passed the insignificant issues that divide people.

You know, like skin colour, political leanings, and free choice over our own bodies.

Unfortunately, the self-righteous reign, and the struggle continues.

Many abhorr the wranglings of those who weild power over the masses.

Yet as time marches on, we find ourselves succumbing to the idea we cannot make a difference. Alvin Lee’s song adeptly addresses the complicity of silence versus action among the general population. He left little room for subtleties.

So, as we tut-tut the tragic deaths that afflict our children in schools, we poo-poo the atrocities occurring in Eastern Europe, and flat out ignore the irreparable damage we inflict on our planet…

Isn’t it time for more to speak up? I don’t know much…

So I’ll leave it up to you.

Thank you for listening along:
