Oscar Nominations Revealed: Meet the 95th Academy Awards Nominees
Read on to learn more about the nominees for best picture and the full list of finalists in all categories
The 95th Academy Awards nominations have been announced, and this year’s list of nominees is full of exciting surprises.
From long-time Hollywood veterans to newcomers to the film industry, this year’s nominees span the spectrum of talent and experience.
From the much-anticipated films of the year, such as “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Elvis” to the unexpected contenders, such as “Tár”, this year’s Oscars nominations showcase a wide range of films and performances.
Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams have announced early today the full list of Oscars nominees during a first-time-ever Virtual Reality live-streaming event.
“All Quiet on the Western Front” is the latest adaptation of the book written by Erich Maria Remarque published in 1929.
Remarque’s opus was made popular by the 1930 and 1979 films, the 2022 version was released on Netflix.
This new production, directed and co-written by Edward Berger, premiered on October 28 and is even more impactful because it’s a German interpretation of a book that was later banned and burned by Hitler’s regime.
The movie retells the story of a young German soldier during World War I. On the front lines, Paul and his comrades are moved by their 19th-century romantic perspective of glory to join the military.
Soon they will watch as the initial exhilaration turns to ashes as their lives are ravaged in mucky trenches and foxholes on the stalling western front.
The screenwriters were able to capture the harsh reality of war depicted by Remarque’s book and all its emotionally powerful developments.
Thus, All Quiet on the Western Front is a must-watch this year and one of my favorite movies to this year’s nominations.
2. Elvis
This is a drama-musical film directed by Baz Luhrmann, about the life and work of the king of rock: Elvis Presley.
Tom Parker (Tom Hanks) is a reclusive music agent who sees an opportunity to break out of the slump in a talented young singer (Austin Butler) whom he believes can become an undisputed music star.
The director, Baz Luhrmann, had the sensibility to capture scenes and details never registered in previous movies about Elvis.
Elvis is such an iconic figure that it’s difficult to walk in his “blue suede shoes.” But what Austin Butler did here is simply off the charts.
The actor portrays Elvis in such a way that he managed to express on the screen all the energy and emotional connection that Elvis conveyed in his shows.
Well, the Elvis legacy didn’t die it lives on when we get the chance to watch such a masterpiece.
3. The Fabelmans
“The Fabelmans” is an American drama directed by Steven Spielberg
Spielberg co-wrote the movie with author, playwright, and screenwriter, Tony Kushner.
This film is a semi-autobiographical film based on Spielberg’s youth and early years as a filmmaker.
The action begins on a 1952 evening in Haddon Township, New Jersey, with Mitzi (Michelle Williams) and Burt Fabelman (Paul Dano) taking their oldest son Sammy (Mateo Zoryan Francis-Deford) to his first movie.
“The Fabelmans” is an expression of love for cinema. The cinematography, the script, and the characters all confirm Spielberg’s outstanding work.
The scenes were breathtakingly beautiful, and Sammy's relationship with his mother is a life lesson because it reminds us how we take for granted things that are in front of us go unnoticed, especially when they involve people we care about.
4. Top Gun: Maverick
Jerry Bruckheimer’s “Top Gun” is a must-watch and if you haven’t watched it yet maybe now it’s a good time to give it a go.
Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) has now more than 30 years of service under his belt as one of the Navy’s finest aviators.
He is now putting his limits on the test pilot as he stalls a rise in rank that would cause him to stop flying.
Maverick will be recruited to train a new generation of “hot shots.” Among them is the son of Maverick’s late friend, Lieutenant Nick Bradshaw, code name “Goose.”
His team will be faced with a nerve-racking mission that would put everyone to the test while Maverick is forced to confront his deepest fears, and ghosts from the past.
5. Women Talking
This Sony film release is directed by Sarah Polley and stars Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Ben Whishaw, and Frances McDormand.
Since Polley’s maiden flight as a director in “Don’t Think Twice,” I am a great admirer of her work. I loved watching “Stories We Tell”, “Away From Her”, and a couple of little-seen shorts like “I Shout Love” or “The Best Day of My Life.”
She has a unique perspective on the stories she approaches. I love how she addresses an ignored everyday fact and condenses it in a way that engages relevant discussions.
Having super award-winning actress, Frances McDormand in the cast makes the film even more impactful.
6. Tár
Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett) is widely regarded in the international classical music world as one of the greatest composers and conductors alive, as well as the first female conductor of a major German orchestra.
She is at the pinnacle of her career, preparing for a book launch and an eagerly anticipated live performance.
However, her life begins to unravel in a variety of ways over the next few weeks.
After winning the best actress award at the Venice festival, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Cate Blanchet win the Oscar here, as her interpretation of Tár is breathtaking.
7. The Banshees of Inisherin
Directed by Martin McDonagh, with Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrel, this is a film sustained by an engaging script and stellar performances.
The film takes you on a metaphysical journey from dawn to dusk. Early on the island seems like a kind of paradise, the color palette is lighter, and all seems in good order.
Still, as the narrative unfolds we notice how the relationships of the characters become darker, and the island itself turns into a claustrophobic prison.
8. Everything Everywhere All at Once
Last but not least as this isn’t built as a ranking comes Dan Kuan’s movie starring the charismatic Michelle Yeoh.
Evelyn Wang the matriarch and owner of a dry cleaners business and her husband Waymong Wang make up our Asian American family.
The business is in a difficult financial situation, which leads to a tax collection hearing with public servant Deirdre, who is superbly played by Jamie Lee Curtis.
As if that weren’t enough, Evelyn’s father, Gong Gong, returns from China, and his daughter, Joy is left on the sidelines.
This, combined with the insane humor of the Daniel brothers, results in some of the most bizarre scenes you can imagine.
Then there’s plenty of room for internal conflict when the pace slows and introspection and nihilism take center stage.
9. Avatar: The Way of Water
This is a fantastic film, but it struggles to live up to the first installment of the saga.
Nonetheless, there’s a lot to look for here. Even though we can still notice the film’s environmental focus, I believe it prioritizes the family relationship over the conflict.
10. Triangle of Sadness
Set on a cruise for the super-rich, the script is mind-bending in so many ways that I’m lost for words.
Divided into three parts, “Triangle of Sadness” first introduces us to model couple Carl and Yaya (Charlbi Dean).
Their relationship dynamics are going through some strains now that her career is on a rapid rise while he has been reduced to an Instagram photographer for his girlfriend.
Still, the true scope of the “Triangle of Sadness” is revealed in the second part, when Carl and Yaya go to a luxury yacht for a week on the high seas.
There they meet several different characters — all rich and completely out of touch with reality.
I don’t want to write too much about it because this is one of those cases where dropping even the smallest spoiler will rob you of the experience.
So let’s just say that the film has all the requirements to keep you hardwired to the story.
Now let’s have a quick recap of all the remaining nominations for the 95th Academy Awards.
