Oscar Isaac is Twice the Fun as He Lights Up the Night in Moon Knight

The second episode is even better than the first.

The latest episode of Moon Knight airing on Disney+ brings us ancient Egyptian gods, their cult followings, and their century-spanning feuds to the forefront of the MCU. At least until Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness releases next month.

Episode two Spoilers ahead!

Oscar Isaac is fantastic in this role. Playing dueling personalities who fight for the same body.

How would you deal with three voices in your head?

Steven Grant finds himself in the position of trying to deal with his alternate personality and the Egyptian god Khonshu in his head at the same time. Learning about everything that’s been happening to him for almost a long time now he’s understandably rattled the entire episode.

Steven wants to take control. He wants to stand up for himself. He tries but eventually seeds control to Marc and takes the passenger seat. However this time he’s conscious.

Steven feels for the first time what it’s like to be trapped in his own body. He feels what Marc has experienced for so long. He immediately wants control back, but Marc won’t allow it.

Imagine finding out you’re married, have supernatural powers gifted to you by a god, and fighting monsters all while you’re asleep. Another part of you living a life you either dream of or are mortified by.

We do find out why Marc Spector is doing this. He is in a debt of some sort to Khonshu. Under the threat of his wife Layla being chosen as Khonshu’s next avatar, Marc does the god’s bidding.

Interesting questions arise about how all of this works. Do you get to choose whether or not you want to become Khonshu’s avatar? Is it just forced upon you? Would Layla really do it knowing what she already knows about it?

Personally, I would bet most people would accept superpowers even if they came at a cost.

Layla is an interesting character. However, it’s hard to believe she didn’t know anything about Steven and just accepts that her husband leaves her for weeks and months at a time. To the point she is waiting for him to turn his phone on so she can track it.

I won’t dwell on it when it comes to the narrative of the show but it’s still odd.

Arthur’s god of choice, Ammit, is explained along with the scales. Think Minority Report if it were a god. Except there is no jail. No trial. If at some point in the future you’re foreseen to do something wrong it’s immediate execution. Arthur also takes judgment into his own hands by killing one of his own followers towards the end of the episode.

Arthur was Khonshu’s avatar before Marc. This leads me to wonder if there really is a way for people to become the avatar, serve Khonshu, and effectively retire. Probably not really much of an option but who knows.

Will we see a god vs. god showdown? More like a Moon Knight vs. Arthur Harrow showdown. I still want more Moon Knight fight scenes but the ones we’re getting are well done. They look good, are interesting visually, and add to the story.

Waiting a week to see what’s in store next for Steven and Marc is becoming a struggle. Disney+ has me on the hook again and I assume I’m not the only one.
