Original Story Ideas
Some writing advice to help you
One of the most common issues that a lot of fiction authors face is how to come up with original story ideas. After all, how many times can a book about vampires or…insert anything that has been done before in here be out there?

Well, here’s the thing — there’s nothing new under the sun. In thousands of years of human storytelling, there’s likely no plot that hasn’t been done numerous times. Note that I did say plot and not story. And it’s important to get clear on the difference between plot and story.
A writing mentor of mine once told me that plot is the events in a movie or novel, while story is about a person who has some sort of flaw that is challenged by the events in the plot and the character either overcomes it or is destroyed by it. For example, just because there is Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and The Vampire Diaries and Twilight, all hugely popular stories about vampires, does not mean you can’t come up with your own vampire story. One idea would be to try making it so the vampire in your story is allergic to every blood type except for one — make it the rarest in the world — and can only take from humans that are that rarest of blood types.
For my first novel, No Remorse No Regret and its sequel, No Rest For The Vengeful, I wanted to do a revenge/vigilante justice type of story. That type of story has been done many times before, usually it’s a former special forces or covert operative guy who goes on the rampage after a family member is victimized. Mine is a small female character who’s five feet zero inches and weighs all of ninety pounds who takes revenge for her own victimization.
What you can do is follow the five w’s of journalism, who, what, when, where, why and of course how.
So, let’s build a possible original story using that. This is the story of a journalist:
Who — was fired from his or her job when it was found he or she had given false information or plagiarized a story. Thus, the flaw is the journalist will lack credibility.
Did What — witnessed police officers committing a crime and tried to go to the authorities, but the lack of credibility the journalist now had means they ignore what he or she had to say. Now with those police gunning for her to silence her, she must go into hiding.
When did this happen? Modern day.
Where — starts in a big city like Toronto or anywhere else, the journalist then goes into hiding in a small town.
Why — she wants to see justice done for the victim and as a side benefit, redeem herself
How — she enlists the support of childhood friends to get to the bottom of the case.
If you want to write an action thriller, try doing something like instead of the hero being a Marine or Navy SEAL, have the hero be an athlete who competed in the Paralympics and is confined to a wheelchair. This could present some options for you in creating unique challenges the character would face.
About the only thing you would have to be concerned with is not making your story exactly like the others in your genre, which is why reading books in your genre is especially important. Like Stephen King said in his book On Writing, “If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time or the tools to write.”
I hope this helps you, make it a great day.
