Swimming with Orcas
Orcas are Called Killer Whales, but Humans are not on the menu
I want to see them in the wild, up close

It started for me when I was a kid. My parents loved animals. The whole family enjoyed watching animal documentaries on TV. The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau was my favorite.
Whales are particularly interesting to me. Going Whale watching in the Pacific Northwest, Mexico and Alaska are on my bucket list. Encountering an Orca in the wild would be a dream come true.
I love the videos and pictures of these amazing animals
I joined a FaceBook group devoted to whales. I love the videos and photographs of these amazing animals, but I shake my head when I read the comments.
I don’t understand how in the Information Age, people can be so misinformed. I will address the comments that are prevalent about these encounters with Orcas.
That’s an encounter that she will never forget
There’s a video that’s on FaceBook, it’s an overhead shot of a woman swimming in the ocean. Three or four orcas surround her, they are close enough to touch.
The whales and humans swim together. It’s a beautiful video. The FaceBook comments go something like this, “ She’s lucky she doesn’t get eaten, I would be terrified.” Other people, myself included, comment on how neat the experience would be.
There are many videos of Orcas swimming close to scuba divers and snorkelers. The Orcas are curious, and sometimes they act like they want to play with the divers.
There’s no record of an Orca killing a human in the wild
There is no record of an Orca killing a human in the wild. Orcas are not part of their diet. My personal opinion is generations earlier, an Orca killed and ate a human, and it tasted terrible. That Orca shared the information with other Orcas. Humans have been off the menu since then.
Orcas are intelligent creatures. I’m sure they have stories and Lore that they pass down from generation to generation. It would be fascinating to understand their language.
Orcas seem to be as interested in us as we are to them. They don’t want to eat humans. The evidence implies they wish to communicate with us.
I hope we learn more about these amazing animals, and I hope that I can someday see them up-close in the wild.
That would be awesome.
