Why Orcas Are My Favorite Animals
Today’s festivities make me feel extra lonely: all of my friends are celebrating with their partners, and as much as I am happy for them, my tummy longs for all the chocolates it will not get, and I feel sad.
I have never been in a relationship during Valentine’s Day and would like to know what it feels like.
Will you, my dear readers, be my Valentine? Will you sit by my side, reading about one of my favorite animals?
The majestic Orca.
Orcas and the whole family of dolphins are super smart: they are one of the few animal species we know of that have developed different cultures.
In fact, what is acceptable behavior in one pod is not necessarily so in another, with different pods having different diets, tricks, and even dialects!
They are one of the most dangerous predators in the entire ocean, but there is not a single recorded incident of an orca killing a human in the wild.
Yes, it happened with captive orcas. But they were being treated so badly!
Orcas are very social animals and love having family around them. In the wild, they love communicating so much that they can go out of their way and learn to speak the language of dolphins!
But when we put them in a tiny tank with few to no others, they are bound to freak out. Zoos should only exist to preserve at-risk species and we should take good care of them!
Orcas can fight back.
Orcas in Spain — a critically endangered subgroup — found a way to disable ships by ramming into their rudder. Talking about a targeted attack! It’s not great for us but they are not hurting people!
But they aren’t just smart, social, and sophisticated animals. They also happen to be super sweet, protecting all kinds of animals — including humans — from sharks.
Orcas share with us some very uncommon human traits: menopause and grief. One time an orca was spotted carrying her calf for 17 days after it had passed away!
They exhibit behavior similar to compassion.
In Iceland, Orcas were spotted taking care of a baby pilot whale. A species of whale that they don’t usually get along with. The scientists didn’t see the baby nursing and were afraid that it wouldn’t survive.
We don’t know what happened to the little one but several orcas were spotted swimming around it protectively, shielding it from currents so that it would need less energy to swim.
Isn’t that crazy adorable?
