OpenSea NFT Heist Is Only the Beginning

$3 million worth of NFT art is now missing.

Art thieves.

One only needs to look back at history and find stories of stolen art. For example, when the Mona Lisa was stolen on August 21, 1911, it took two years for the authorities to recover the prized painting hanging in the Louvre Museum.

And art remains to be at the centerpiece of many Hollywood heist movies. And to this day, there are still art pieces that have yet to be recovered. Whoever has Van Gogh's Poppy Flowers is a wealthy man. That painting is worth over $50 million.

But with NFT art, is everything about to change or not?

My NFT art.

Today, there are reports that $3 million worth of NFT art has been stolen from OpenSea, one of the most popular NFT marketplace.

Disclosure: I have an OpenSea account, and my NFT art is for sale here.

While OpenSea has yet to confirm if the NFT heist is true or not, it has issued a tweet that it is investigating the reported incident.

We are actively investigating rumors of an exploit associated with OpenSea related smart contracts. This appears to be a phishing attack originating outside of OpenSea’s website. Do not click links outside of opensea.io.

In a report by the website theblockcrypto.com, 19 accounts are affected, and some of the NFT art missing are Bored Apes, Azuki and CloneX.

The CEO of Nasen, Alex Svanevik estimates that about 19 OpenSea users have been impacted.

Blockchain crimes

Recently the Justice Department issued a statement about their recovery of the missing Bitcoin stolen in 2016 from Bitfinex, that Bitcoin haul is now worth $4.5 billion.

The couple arrested are Ilya Lichtenstein, 34, and his wife, Heather Morgan, 31both have been very active on social media. Heather is even moonlighting as a rapper.

Neither appears to be your typical criminals, although the charges have yet to be proven in court.

It shows theft doesn't have to happen in the real world but can now happen in cyberspace.

Millions, if not billions, of cryptocurrency, can be transferred from a digital wallet, although every transaction is recorded on a ledger.

Criminals can abandon their loot if it becomes traceable once they move cryptocurrencies across different digital wallets.

NFT Art theft

This isn't the first time that an NFT Art has gone missing. Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs Worth US$2.2 Million Stolen From Collector.

Of course, the only way for thieves to make money is by selling the stolen Art. And this is where it can get muddy, as any transfer of ownership of an NFT Art means it will be available for anyone to see.

And if you are like Melania Trump, you can buy your own NFT art and pretend that someone else is interested in collecting your art.

Can it be a case of trying to pump and dump?

Why would people try to steal NFT art?

If this crime is traceable, why would anyone do it? Could it be to become famous? Or would they keep the NFT art for themselves?

As our society moves to WEB3, the metaverse, the adaptation of everything crypto, blockchain, and the NFT, becomes omnipresent in our lives.

We can only expect more of these crimes to happen. Anything of value is a goldmine for criminals, and if you think NFT art is still JPEG art, think again.
