Only Read Things That Grab You, and if They Do, Engage Thoroughly
Reading should entertain you, inform you, or get you fired up to comment. If not, you wasted your time.
Some articles are a chore to read through. Some are on interesting topics but are badly written. Discard these and move on. You don’t owe them your attention.
Never read something just for the sake of reading. Never keep reading something you find boring or difficult unless you absolutely have to.
The internet is crammed full of things to read, many of them about the same things. You are spoilt for choice, and life is short, so don’t waste your time.
If an article is worth your time, it should compel you to respond:
- If it teaches you something fascinating, you will want to thank them.
- If it makes you laugh your ass off, you’ll want to let them know it’s their fault you almost wet yourself.
- If you strongly disagree, you won’t be able to stop yourself from telling them why.
- If you strongly agree, same thing.
If an article grabs you, interact. Highlight the bits that caught your attention. Have a conversation with the author.
Reading can be an active process rather than a passive one. An article is just the starting point for a discussion.
