Only a Few People Will Achieve Their Goals in 2024; How To Be One of Them

It’s almost that time of year when everyone wants to set a new life goal to improve their lives.

In fact, a recent survey found that in 2024, 35 million people in the UK will have made New Year’s resolutions, the top ones being health (35%), money (29%), family (26%) and self-improvement (25%).

But statistics suggest that, on average, most people will only last 7 weeks before giving up a new habit.

Therefore, many are going to give up in less than two months.

The simple reason is that lifestyle changes or habits are the hardest to maintain and commit to. It’s like you’re trying to change your whole identity and the story you tell yourself, which is not easy to do.

However, just because it is hard doesn’t mean it’s unachievable. The few who succeed, or I have seen succeed, all have a process that makes it simple, practical and effective.

Also, don’t let the fear of failure stop you, as it is still an excellent time to set goals. The reason motivation is high due to the psychological effect of beginning a new year. So use it to your advantage, plan and execute on it.

Let’s take eating healthy, for example. Everyone has an idea about good nutrition, but few have a plan that ensures they eat well consistently.

Creating a plan, in this case, a meal plan can be a simple yet effective step towards eating healthier. You can streamline this process by:

  • Making a list of healthy food you’re going to eat on a notepad or mobile
  • Planning the food shopping
  • Preparing the food daily, every few days or weekly
  • Then, eating the meals

As a result, you’re filled with nutritious energy that supports your activities and immune system. Easy peasy lemon squeezy! Sorry, I had to get that line of my mind. But you get the idea.

Planning simplifies things you need to do to ensure success.

But you also need to be organised and prioritise, or it can be overwhelming.

Maybe you have a lot to be organised with or a little, but this can evolve over time as you learn and try new ways.

The best way is to start by prioritising and planning for the habit or activities that can make the most significant positive impact in your life.

For example, sleep has a domino effect on all other areas of your life. Because if you’re lacking sleep, then you’re most likely to:

It makes sticking to your new habits more painful and difficult than it should be.

If you started by focusing on creating a plan to improve your sleep;

How much easier would those good choices be?

How much more productive would you be?

How likely are you to stick to your new year goals?

Prioritising sleep is a huge step towards the right direction, as it will underpin your daily performance, choices and energy. A practical and effective plan can be:

  • Stick to a bedtime schedule – sleep around the same time whether it’s weekdays, weekends or holidays.
  • Remove any distractions – keep phones and gadgets away from sight and reach.
  • Do your sleep maths – if you need to wake up at 8 am, get to bed by midnight latest.
  • Sleep in a dark, cold room – Invest in some good blackout curtains. If you’re on a budget, invest in comfortable light-block eye masks. Leave your windows open before dinner to keep the room cold, so when it’s time to sleep, your bed feels warm and cosy.
  • Sleep in a comfortable bed – if it isn’t, invest in a new one, new sheets, a new pillow, etc. We spend a third of our life sleeping, so it’s a wise investment

After you get this key habit right, start doing broader planning. Zoom out and think:

What other areas need focus and a plan?

What will it take to get a better outcome?

What direction do you want your life to go?

What do you want to achieve?

Then, start planning out your one-year, five-year or even ten-year goals. Of course, there will be roadblocks or obstacles and hurdles you have to overcome.

But it all starts with better planning, organisation, preparation and execution. It begins with you giving yourself the best possible chance to succeed and achieve your goals.

Because if you fail to plan, then you will fail to succeed.
