I hate wasting food. I see it happen every day in supermarkets, restaurants, and bars. In every home. If you eat half a sandwich, you throw the rest away.

Most of all, I don’t like throwing bread away. All of my life, I heard someone in my family telling me that bread is a special food. Actually, bread has a great value all over the world, in every civilization and in our daily life. It connects people to culture, tradition, and religion.

It is a symbol of culture, war, hunger, and peace. It is indispensable in human survival. It has an exceptional nutritional value, even if it is made from simple ingredients like flour, water, salt, and yeast. Everybody knows what bread is, yet a lot of people don’t have bread to eat.

For all these reasons, in my family, there was always a new recipe to prepare old hard bread, instead of throwing it away.

The easiest recipe is the one I adopted since I am not an expert cook — not yet at least. It is just a way to revive stale bread. Take the old hard bread you have at home, put it into a bowl with milk, and soften it with your hands. It is so pleasant and relaxing: the act of molding bread puts you in contact with nature. Add apple slices, raisins or nuts, or anything you have at home.

Put it into small cups and in the oven, and bake for 30 minutes. You will have a sweeter kind of bread, that you can add to any meal like a special side garnish.

You will feel very proud of yourself. You have done something to respect the other cultures, and to respect the people who have no food. You are involved in humankind.
