One Thing a Personal Experience of an Ordinary British Girl Can Teach You
Life changes. Or better, you can change it
Have you ever felt that all your efforts were useless, and started comparing your life to the life of more successful friends, or schoolmates? You notice their nice clothes, their houses, their good jobs, and even worse, their happy relationships. I am sure the results of comparing their lives to yours made you feel even worse.
Whenever I feel unsatisfied or I start looking at other people’s success, I remember this short story, which was a personal experience of a girlfriend of mine.
She attended high school in the UK, in a small school where all girls had access to a personal locker. The lockers were all in the same place, and if you walked along the corridor to go to any classroom, you could see them all.
Every year on Valentine’s day all the girls received a rose, a symbol of a secret love. Some of them even had a little card, others just a gift from an anonymous lover. It must have been very exciting!
My friend used to walk by the lockers every day, and year after year, she never had a flower on Valentine’s day. She never had someone who secretly loved or admired her. Maybe she was just a little ordinary, she used to wear eyeglasses with a thick frame that concealed her bright eyes. At the time, she didn't care too much about her looks, she only cared about studying.
Years later and after we became friends, she told me this story, and I could still feel her pain and her humiliation. I felt sad for her. I felt angry for the other girls who never talked to her about it or gave her their flowers. I am sure some of them noticed it and took delight in her disappointment.
She is now a very beautiful and successful manager, happily married to an Italian man. She got to this point through hard work, and by making big changes in her life, including having to move to another country, Italy.
Yet, she still remembers those moments.
I always think of that episode, and I hope you will think about it too when you feel you’re the least successful or happy person on earth. You are not. Everybody has a different journey, sometimes you just need to decide if you are willing to accept what you have, or if you want more out of life.
Are you satisfied with your daily routines? You are the only one who knows the answer. If not, try to change something, or look for a course or a job you are interested into. Do something new, look around, there must be an activity that makes you feel a little better, and that will show you the way to follow.
If you don’t try, you will never know if you are dissatisfied just because it’s your personality, or if it is due to the fact that you are on the wrong path and you are wasting your time.
Valentine’s day is coming, are you ready?
