The Middle Path of Life

A calm mind has all the answers

“A calm and quiet mind is an ocean of knowledge with all the answers.” — K A Simran

I was feeling agitated yesterday. When my friend called me up, I yelled at her for no reason. Soon after I put the phone down, I realized my mistake and called her back. After a few minutes, I got irritated for no reason. It made me upset. I wanted to undo the wrong. So, I called her for the second time, but again, I reacted the same way.

I was having a terrible body ache. Could that be the reason? I couldn’t figure it out.

I took a deep breath and said to myself, “Simran, you need to calm down.”

So I decided to take a hot shower. It always works for me, like meditation. My mind played a rewind button and showed me everything that had happened since I woke up. I laughed at my silliness and enjoyed the hot water.

After saying my morning prayer, I got a call from the same friend, and we talked as if nothing happened. We both understand that it is normal to get frustrated sometimes. All we need is to give some time to ourselves to calm down.

This incident reminds me of a Buddha story I read a few years ago. Many of you who have read about Buddha, also know that his favorite disciple was Ananda. So, today I am going to share a story about the Buddha and Ananda.

One day, the Buddha was sitting under a tree. He was watching Ananda, who seemed a little distressed over something. The Buddha watched him going left and right again and again. It looked like he was trying to solve something, but could not find a solution.

It went on like that for some time.

After an hour, the Buddha called him over and said, “Ananda, bring me the veena, the instrument you play.”

Ananda went inside and brought the veena. When he was about to start playing it, the Buddha said, “Let me tune it for you today.”

The Buddha took the veena and started adjusting the strings. He kept on tightening them.

It frightened Ananda and he shouted out, “Your Holiness, please don’t tighten the strings anymore, or else they will break.”

“Oh, I am sorry, I did not know that,” the Buddha said. He then started to loosen up the strings.

Ananda got sad and said, “Your Holiness, one cannot play on these strings because they are too loose now.”

The Buddha kept the veena aside and smiled.

He looked at Ananda and said, “Similarly Ananda, you cannot find an answer to the question that is bothering you, as long as your strings are too tight, or your strings are too loose. The mind has to be relaxed and in the right state of tuning to be able to find an answer to any question. The mind has to be in a balanced state. Therefore, one should always follow the middle path. One should not go to extremes.”

This story tells us that the mind can solve any problem, whether it is a physical or a psychological problem, as long as it is relaxed and when the body is fit.
