One Science Backed Key to Easily Change Your Life

From laser light to making sales, coherence is power

“If every day, your negative feelings and emotions are creating the same energy by reacting to the same problem, then that energy produces a signal in the quantum field. If that signal comes from an incoherent brain and heart, then you are producing an energetic frequency that is carrying thoughts which no longer have coherence — they have less power.” — Dr Joe Dispenza

I saw this quote, and immediately recognized the brutal truth of it. It explains why the best sales people only sell products they believe in. It also explains why so many people who try to start side hustles fail at them.

The good news, though, is that it also explains what you can do to fix it. With this key in hand, you can rapidly change your life.

Create a successful side hustle.

Or move ahead with advancement and promotions in your job.

The choice is yours.

Sunlight versus laser light

Consider the difference between a sunbeam and a laser beam.

The sun produces massive amounts of power. Our solar panels capture enough energy to run our home. But you can nap in a sunbeam and just feel pleasantly warm.

A laser uses much less power. Yet for a few hundred dollars, you can buy a home laser that runs on standard household current. It is capable of burning through wood, leather, and a variety of other materials.

The difference is that laser light is coherent.

Coherence means that everything is moving in the same direction, at the same speed. And the power is magnified to an incredible amount.

Opera singers and army recruits

Are you familiar with the ability of opera singers to shatter a glass? It’s not because they sing that much louder than the average person. It’s because their voices are trained to be coherent.

When a normal person sings, their voice changes ever so slightly as they hold a note. You can hear this as a slight “pulsing” of sound, as the sound waves magnify and dampen each other.

An opera singer, on the other hand, is trained to hold a note exactly. The sound waves only magnify each other. If those sound waves correspond to the resonance frequency of something, they are further magnified. In the case of a wine glass, that results in shattered glass.

Army recruits face a similar challenge. If they are marching in unison, every boot hits the ground at the same time. The coherent sound waves of all those footfalls magnify each other.

If they are crossing a bridge, the magnified impacts of their boots can cause the bridge to dangerously weaken or even collapse. To prevent this from happening, they are trained to break cadence before starting across a bridge.

This turns their footfalls from coherence to incoherence. They no longer magnify each other, and no longer have the power to break the bridge.

Takeaway: Coherent light and sound are much more powerful than scattered light and sound.

Coherence of spirit

It makes sense that light and sound waves are amplified by coherence. That’s the nature of waves. But what about things outside the physical realm? How does this apply to our beliefs and behavior?

Over the millennium, we have evolved finely-tuned apparatus for detecting lies. Damp palms and inability to meet our gaze are only the beginning.

One of the crucial tells used by professionals to spot someone who is lying (or at least, not telling the complete truth) is to look for non-congruent gestures. This is someone who says yes while shaking their head, for example. (Keep in mind cultural differences — an Indian person may shake their head to mean yes.)

The point is, the head and the heart are not coherent. The head wants to lie, and the heart wants to tell the truth. They are sending out different messages. As a result, those messages lack power.

This is also why salespeople who don’t believe in their product have trouble. People pick up on the mismatch between what they’re saying and what they believe. These prospective customers don’t trust the salesperson. So they don’t buy.

Conflicting goals

Another way the spirit can lack coherence is when you have conflicting goals. You want to make more money so you can better support your family. But you want to spend more time with your family. If making money takes you away from time with your family, you will be conflicted.

Often, our conflicting goals play out in an inability to remain focused. We try to do the task to advance one goal, but our thoughts keep returning to the other goal. We lack the power of coherence.

Finding clarity can be crucial to resolving conflicting goals. Once you’re clear on what one thing you want more than anything — your big “why” — everything else falls into place. Does this task support your “why”? If yes, do it. If not, don’t do it.

If you’re doing something in accord with your big “why”, your heart and mind will be coherent. You won’t be distracted by thoughts about what you could be doing instead. As a result, your thoughts and actions will have more power. You’ll get more done, and do it better.

Another way of resolving conflicting goals is to challenge your either/or thinking about the goals. Many people who start a side hustle from home get their kids involved in it. Especially for anything involving crafts, kids can sort things by colors, or do other simple tasks. It’s not so much that the kids are productive workers. Rather, this allows parents to spend time with the kids. It replaces “either/or” with “and”.

Takeaway: When your head and heart are in agreement, you think and act with more power.

Changing your life

Now that you know the importance of coherence, how can you use this to change your life?

Your big why

First of all, figure out what your big “why” is. You can combine long-term goals under the same why.

For example, I’m writing articles because I want to improve people’s lives. I’m also enrolled in a PhD program, because that will give me credentials. Why do I want credentials? To make it easier for people to believe what I’m saying. It’s the same why. To help make people’s lives better.

I also have financial goals, but those are based on the same why. The financial goals give me the time to write, which is how I make people’s lives better.

If you aren’t sure what your big why is yet, find the one current project or goal that means the most to you. Why? Whatever you answered, why is that important? Keep asking that of every answer you give, until you get to “because” or “it just is”. That’s your big why — the reason that has no other reason to justify it.

Align your goals

Put all of your projects and goals on a list. Divide it into things that support your why, and things that don’t. Cross off everything that doesn’t support your why that you can get rid of or stop doing.

Is there anything on your list that doesn’t contribute to your why? Take a good, hard look at it. Is it something you truly want to do? Or is it something that you think you should do, or are supposed to do? Is it something you think is the fastest way to accomplish something else you really want?

One common thing people try to do is invest in real estate, cryptocurrencies, or whatever the other hot money maker is. They don’t really care about those things. They just want to make a lot of money, so they can use the money for something they do care about.

Those people are almost never successful.

Because to do well in any venture, you have to be willing to put in the time, attention, and passion to develop your skill and spot opportunities. Or get in before it becomes hot. Otherwise, if you’re just chasing a trend, doing what “common wisdom” says to do, you’ll most likely lose money.

Simplify your list

Even if everything on your list supports your big why, you probably can’t do all of it. Figure out which 1–3 things best support your big why.

Everything else can be done later, done by someone else, or not done at all.

If you only have to concentrate on a handful of big, important things, you can give them the time and attention they deserve. You can spend hours in flow, getting deep work done. You will be coherent. You will be powerful.

Takeaway: Find the 1–3 most important goals or projects that support your big why, to put coherent time, attention, and passion behind them.

Conclusion

Coherence is when every part of something is moving in the same direction at the same speed. Whether it’s sound waves, marching soldiers, or photons in a beam of light, it’s more powerful when it’s coherent.

A coherent spirit is when your heart and mind are moving in the same direction at the same speed. Your actions and beliefs are united. This helps you think and act with more power.

To change your life, align your actions and beliefs under a single big why. Stop doing the things that do not support your why. Focus on just a few that do.

Then put your full power behind accomplishing your why by being coherent.
