One Phone Call Can Change Everything

For good or for bad

I remember the call when I learned that my first manuscript was accepted. I don’t recall what was said, or who said it, but I remember my excitement.

I’d answered the kitchen wall phone. Being professional, I didn’t squeal, but I bounced with joy and spun in place. I ended up wrapped like a mummy in the phone cord.

That was a life-changing phone call. My life divided into before and after.

Other phone calls are life-changing in a bad way. Learning my mother died. The doctor giving my dad 6 months to live. (A specialist later refuted that — one of the good calls.)

I’ve made those calls. Telling my parents I’d taken a job and dropped out of grad school. I was engaged. I’d been laid off.

One phone call can change everything.
