Summary

Nicole Dake, a former student of a high school teacher who is now a poetry magazine editor, has been invited to submit her work for publication and reflects on the value of maintaining professional relationships.

Abstract

Nicole Dake, a published poet on Medium, has recently been contacted by her former high school teacher who is now an editor for a poetry magazine. The teacher, impressed by Dake's writing on Medium, offered her the opportunity to submit her work to the magazine. Dake reminisces about her time in high school, where she was considered a "standout student," and reflects on the gratifying nature of this recognition, especially after more than two decades since graduation. The two have kept in touch over the years, with the teacher previously writing Dake's college recommendation letter and providing a LinkedIn recommendation. Dake emphasizes the importance of networking and the unexpected ways in which past contacts can influence one's future. She expresses hope for this new writing opportunity and encourages readers to explore her poetry and learn more about her through her Medium profile and social media presence. Additionally, Dake offers her books on Amazon and extends a generous offer for a free PDF copy of her "Trauma Survivor's Guide to Coping With Panic Attacks" to those in need. She concludes by providing a link to an AI service she recommends and by showing solidarity with Ukraine amidst the current crisis.

One of My Old High School Teachers Reached Out About my Writing

He saw that I was publishing poems on Medium, and asked me to write for another publication.

I have written poetry since back when I was in Middle School, and have published a bit here on Medium.

Yesterday, one of my old high school teachers reached out to me on FaceBook about a new writing opportunity. He is an editor now for a poetry magazine, and asked me if I am interesting in submitting.

He also said that he often remembers our class, and that I was a “standout student” back then.

Since I graduated High School over 20 years ago, that was pretty gratifying.

We kept in touch a little over the years. I had him write my recommendation letter for college. A few years ago I found him on LinkedIn and asked for a recommendation.

You never know who will come back into your life, or how your contacts can help you in the future!

Here’s hoping that this opportunity will pan out.

If you want to read some of my poetry, you can check it out on this list.
