One Crucial Step Towards A Better, More Responsible Government

Stronger Laws Are Long Overdue In The Country

The government must expand the definition of corruption in terms of legislation to significantly reduce and prevent the misuse of government funds.

Understanding What Corruption Actually Entails

Currently, corruption in Malaysia only refers to bribery, which in turn, only refers to the act of receiving or giving bribes as payment or encouragement for an individual for doing or not doing something related to official duties.

The current definition is far too simplified and narrow to impose effective action and punishment against individuals who engage in corrupt activities other than bribery.

Corruption actually means acts of dishonesty or deception by those in power and includes practices of cronyism, nepotism, diversion of funds, misappropriation of money, fraud, etc, and not only bribery.

Stronger Laws Needed To Effectively Tackle Corruption

As a result of all the corruption in the country by the politicians and bureaucrats for the past couple of decades, there has been a huge waste of government funds, thereby thwarting the government’s initiatives and programs to effectively and meaningfully help the people, especially the B40 group.

In order to effectively reduce and put a stop to all corrupt practices and activities in the country, the government must enact legislation such that the definition of corruption is expanded to include cronyism, nepotism, diversion of funds, embezzlement, fraud, etc, and not just bribery.

With this move, as compared to before, such corrupt practices and acts will come under greater scrutiny and oversight by the relevant authorities, and those caught will face stricter, harsher punishment.

Hence, it acts as a stronger form of deterrence.

Strengthen Monitoring As Well As Check And Balance Mechanisms

Along with this, the legal system must be modified such that it’s able to effectively put a stop to as well as prevent all these acts that fall under the umbrella of corruption.

Also, stronger check and balance mechanisms need to be established together with independent oversight committees on the relevant dealings and transactions taking place within the government.

With all these much-needed systemic measures, the wastage of large amounts of government funds that has plagued Malaysia for far too long can be significantly reduced and eventually, stopped.

Making Sure Funds Meant For The People Are Actually Spent Accordingly

As a result, this will surely increase the amount of existing funds that the government can then spend on programs that can truly help the people and uplift their socioeconomic statuses.

It cannot be denied that one of the most effective ways to ensure that government funds allocated for the purpose of implementing programs to help the people are actually utilized for such purposes, is by firmly eradicating all forms of corruption.

Therefore, the Malaysian must seriously expand the definition of corruption in terms of legislation in order to significantly reduce the misuse of government funds for the good of all citizens.
