One Confusing Thing Many Writers Don’t Understand About the Stat Page

When you think you’re a writer, but you’re — in fact — a commenter.

Most writers think Medium stats page shows them the number of views, reads, and fans for their stories. It’s true, but most writers don’t realize Medium considers our comments are also stories.

That’s why you cannot comment more than 100 times per day.

It’s not about comments per se. It’s about stories. Medium doesn’t want writers to publish more than one hundred stories daily. Side note: who would do that?!

The stat page offers two categories: stories and responses (or comments).

But this is only to get a detailed view. The numbers your see in the bar chart are cumulated. These are the total number of views, reads, and fans your stories and your responses (which are also stories) got.

Next time you see a bump in your stats and can’t see which story became viral, check your responses.
