In those days people–well, men–exercised and played sports in the nude. The sign over the door was both an invitation and a warning. If you come through these doors, you must take part in the struggle.

No spectators allowed.

The point, you might say, was to have skin in the game. Taking part in life is the only way to know if you’re going somewhere in life.

Stop Scrolling and Start Participating

I dare you to go into the settings on your phone and see which apps you spend the most time using.

Whether it is through endless scrolling, clicking on a link, or even reading an article, developers design apps to keep your attention. There is plenty of information on the internet on how social media hooks our brains.

Unless you are using social media for business, it is nothing more than a spectator sport.

I know, everyone needs to veg out on screen time sometimes. I am not hating on social media. I’m trying to agitate what you already know — it is easier to be a spectator in life than a participant.

The Most Rewarding Path in Life

As a spectator, you can sit in your seat a safe distance away from the action and yell at the players down on the field.

There is no risk involved in being a spectator. You do not have to face your fears.

But “The credit,” said Theodore Roosevelt, “belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds…” What is he saying?

The credit belongs to the man or woman who has skin in the game.

Today, more than ever, it is easy to sit on the side and criticize people who are in the game. Taking shots at celebrities, influencers, or entrepreneurs online is a national pass time these days. But most people who get their thrills tearing others down do so because they are unhappy with the outcome of their life or because they think it will provide protection from future pain.

You can live a safe, predictable, and low-risk life. But you do not get life’s best rewards that way, do you? A fulfilling life means taking part in life. It means putting skin in the game.

What is Skin In the Game For You?

For you, putting skin in the game might mean starting that book, or business, or relationship you have always dreamed about. It will mean letting go of your preconceived notions of how things should work and surrendering to becoming the person you want to be.

You live life in the struggle, the pursuit, and the climb. You become the person who can achieve your goals. But to do so takes guts. It takes a willingness to get in the ring, take some punches and shed some blood.

Your level of participation in life determines how far you will go in life.

So get in and struggle and exert yourself in a worthy pursuit, or go somewhere else. Strip or retire.
