On Yellowstone National Park
Memories of the iconic national park, Part 1

A few weeks back, the Yellowstone National Park turned 152 years old. It was established in 1872. It’s not only the USA’s first national park but the world’s!
I won’t lie, as I typed it, I got goosebumps all over me. What a great initiative! If they had not made it a national park, maybe rich folks would have built mansions there. Great decision by the then politicians, deserves my respectful nod.
As I was studying ecology in my MSc in India, I frequently came across this National Park’s name. I was kind of annoyed at the frequent mention, as it’s exotic, and I am never likely to see it. That was in the year 2006.
Destiny plays such games, in 2011, I came to the USA to live! In 2013, I got an opportunity to visit the park!
This huge national park occupies areas of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho states. The Yellowstone River flows through the park. In the summer of 2022, heavy rain caused devastating flooding. You must have seen buildings toppling over the river, and bridges getting washed away.
Anyway, when I visited in the summer of 2013, it was serene. I stood on the edge of the road, watching the bison, the national animal of the USA, graze in Lamar Valley.

In one stretch of the river, I even saw a beaver in action, as it was gnawing a small tree to build its house!

Yellowstone National Park sits on a caldera, and all the hot underground water shows up as mud pots, geysers, hot springs, and fumaroles. It’s unique.

It’s eerie, toxic, and dangerous. But following safety measures, one can savor the geological marvel. I have heard that the fumes create own weather of the park, and it rains often.

The old faithful geyser erupts periodically. Thousands of visitors throng daily to see the spectacle.

Thank you for reading. I will share other memories of the park, in the next part.
Have you visited the park?
