An Original Poem
On the Other Side Greener

Tucked between crisp bleached sheets Whitened fresh just hours before Black turns blue ‘til crimson spills Around shades bled red Over the floorboards To wash against splinters and grains Made plainly visible in dawn’s birthright Breathing ragged in bloodied light Then held As pink turns gold Held again hoping gold will remain And not turn white hot blazing Too bright to be enjoyed Indian summer yearned for In the first moments chilled Then cursed in late September heat Blankets already wielded in defense Window insulation readied then left In the middle of the floor To be tripped over A while longer In destitute bluster Those oven warm days Are remembered longingly Standing amidst bare branches All angled sharpness Without their span of Green garment To soften and disguise Their severity As clear cold knifes through Down layers And woolen bundling And fleece and silk To kiss skin Not yet adapted To the season’s harsh brutality Brown ground too Devoid of real color Sits barren of observable life The daffodil And hyacinth Have withdrawn And lay fast asleep For their long winters sleep
