POETRY

On Seeking Courage

Free Verse poem

Image by abir mohamad from Pixabay

I wallowed in the mire for years — decades even allowed it to seep into my bones to fill me raw yet, empty

Like quicksand each struggle hastened my retreat — some days I welcomed the sinking, sinking, sinking a slow demise the loss of self

In all that blackness you waited patient and calm — You knew some day I would claw you out bring you to the surface

I once called you an elusive bastard but that was my black heart seeking redemption — Now, grey skies have scattered leaving moonlit traces upon the bay
