On Pen and Paper
A daily practice
In a world filled with constant hustle and deadlines, it’s easy to get caught up in the frenzy of daily living and feel overwhelmed. We’ve all been there, racing against the clock, juggling multiple responsibilities, and wondering how to find a moment of peace in the chaos. It’s during such moments that we can learn the invaluable lesson of counting our blessings. We can never go wrong with gratitude for it is a source of solace amid the whirlwind of life. One of the ways I’ve embraced this practice is by writing down my blessings at the beginning of each day.
Why write them? Writing down what we’re grateful for encourages us to become more aware of the positive aspects of our lives. It shifts our focus from what we lack or what’s going wrong to what we have and what’s going well.
From this awareness, one may notice a shift towards a positive perspective from a mindset of scarcity. When we consciously acknowledge the things we’re grateful for, we realize that there are many good things in our lives, even on challenging days. This shift in perspective can reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. It boosts positive emotions. The neurochemicals in our brains such as dopamine and serotonin are released.
It also enhances our emotional resilience. When we face difficulties or setbacks, our reservoir of positive memories and experiences can help us cope better and bounce back from adversity. This ripples to create a positive start at the beginning of the day. It can serve as a mental and emotional anchor, reminding us of the good things in our lives, even when we encounter challenges or stress later in the day.
Also, when we write down the things we are grateful for, we easily remember the people in our lives and we become inclined to express it to them. This can lead to increased feelings of connection and reciprocity which in turn can improve our interactions with others creating a more positive social environment.
Almost always, once I am done writing down what I am grateful for, I feel my energies elevating. This positive way of starting the day motivates us to tackle tasks with enthusiasm and energy, rather than feeling bogged down by negativity and stress. In the midst of writing, we become more mindful, it encourages us to be present in the moment and fully appreciate the good things around us, thereby reducing the chance for negativity to seep in.
Keeping a gratitude journal allows for self-reflection. This reservoir of reflection as it builds over time helps identify what we are grateful for, the values we keep, and priorities we have in life.
From pen to paper, this seemingly small act becomes a transformative habit that exerts a profoundly positive influence on our daily mindset and overall well-being. It builds our resilience, providing us with the inner strength to carry on. It serves as a steadfast reminder that even on the toughest days, there are always reasons to be thankful and optimistic.
Grateful for the gift of journaling.
