Old Cars and Lessons Learned

More stories from the daze of my youth and things I will never do again.

Return to the daze of my youth.

While working in the shop a while back I found a distributor cap and rotor button, new in the box, for a ’78 Dodge 318. Mom and Dad sold me that Dodge Aspen station wagon over 30 years ago.

After I chased an ex girlfriend to Missouri to get the Dodge back (When you loan someone a car there is no obligation to bring it back.) I brought it home, finished the repairs, and went to see my son who was still a child and living with my first ex wife of the two I married.

When I saw the car my ex was driving I was panic struck that my son was being driven around in such a dangerous automobile. She asked for extra money above my regular child support to fix her car so I told her I needed to drive it a few miles to determine just how much money I’d need to “loan” her.

I put the word “loan” in quotes because she never paid me back any of the “loans” I gave her.

Anyway, after driving her car a few miles I brought it back, and under the pretense of going to get the money, I loaded my ex and my son into my Dodge and drove to my house where I gave her the keys to my car, and told her to keep it. I could buy another car cheaper than I could fix her car. I even paid to keep tags and insurance on the car, not because I cared so much for her, but because I didn’t want my son riding around in a dangerous piece of junk. I even offered to pay to maintain the car.

A few months later, when the alternator went out on the Dodge, she called me and asked if I would call a wrecker to have it picked up on Old Oak Ridge Road just outside of Greensboro. Seems she had been having problems with the alternator and continued driving the car until it quit.

Only she didn’t bother to tell me the car had broken down almost a month before and had long been towed away for blocking the road.

Back then you could buy a good used alternator for less than $25.oo, or a new one for $50.oo and put it on in 15 minutes.

I let her Daddy pay for her next car.

Today I wish I still had that Dodge.

If anyone needs a distributor cap and rotor button, new in the box, for a ’78 Dodge 318 or most any other early 318, I’ve got one I can let go dirt cheap. I might have an oil filter too. They’re even made in the USA.

Dogs Will Be Dogs

Never allow your dogs to train you.

I once moved in with a woman who had 2 poodles. The first morning I was there they came running into the bedroom at 4:00 am barking their fool heads off. “What’s wrong?” I asked.

“They’re just hungry,” She answered as she got out of bed, went to the kitchen, and fed them.

The second morning same thing. The problem was, I had to get up at 5:00 to go to work six days a week, and really needed that last hour of sleep.

On the third morning, again the same thing, but when she started to get out of bed I grabbed her wrist and firmly pulled her back to bed demanding she not feed them before 5:00. “But they’re hungry,” she cried.

“It won’t hurt them to wait an hour,” I demanded. “They can wait.”

It only took 3 days to break the 3 of them (her and the 2 poodles) of the habit.

Keep having fun with It Happened to Me.
