Oh, the Memories That a Simple Photo Can Ignite!

In response to the May 2023 DEP photography & weekly prompt: a fond memory (31 of 52)

Every time I glance at this photo, the memories flood into my mind’s eye. What a miraculous day that was, it changed my life forever. August 6, 1984, you came into our world. You were the firstborn of my daughter, Christine. My heart melted when I first saw you cradled in her arms. This picture I took is a poignant representation of motherhood for me.

Some time far in the future, you and I had taken a girl trip to Canada together. It was shortly after you married. Your husband knew how much I meant to you and he graciously let you go. This is what I wrote in my commemorative album to record our time together.

Kathryn Michele, my first grandchild.

I was too young to be a grandmother.

Why did my daughter do this to me?

But, there was something very special about you.

I wondered what you would be like in the future.

I watched you grow — — and — — mature.

Unfortunately, there was a great distance

in miles between us most of your life.

Even so, the two of us developed a close bond.

We participated in unique adventures over the years.

Then I witnessed your wedding ceremony.

You were no longer the “little” girl, but a young adult.

Now we converse as woman to woman.

In September 2004, we drove to Canada,

to the Rockies, where I showed you my

beloved mountains.

Not the same way as your grandmother, who loves to climb them,

but for their natural beauty.

Instead of an ice axe, you are armed with your camera.

I am delighted that we were able to spend

this time together.

Grandma loves you dearly!
