oh, hallway baby
poetry prompt: strange pandemic/ physical distancing stories

oh, hallway baby
in a time where everyone is home tucked away in their individual apartments
how eerie it is for you to roam free just in the hallway
making your baby noises cries for attention suddenly snapping us out of television watching with the most ominous feel
or even spookier when all is but silent and suddenly you laugh from one end of the hallway to another
we ask: are you alive? are you real? are you now a figment of our imagination arisen out of isolation?

Lucy (The Eggcademic) [she/her] first of all wants to indicate that this is such a cursed stock photo image but really conveys the feeling of hearing said hallway baby. Also this is a true story, but not exactly my true story. I’m in a long-distance relationship so I video chat with my partner a lot, and I can hear this hallway baby crying at odd times of the day and night. At first I dismissed it as just something he could hear from his neighbours, but if you listen really carefully, you hear that the baby truly starts on one hallway and ends at the other end of the hallway. He’s sure it’s a real baby that somehow roams free in the apartment hallways but honestly, until further empirical evidence is obtained, hallway baby remains a spooky tale I tell everyone in this dramatized way.
