Of All The House MD Quotes (The Two I Remember Most)

John Henry Giles: (To House) “You don’t risk jail and your career to save somebody doesn’t want to be saved unless you got something, anything... one thing. The reason normal people got wives and kids and hobbies, whatever, that’s because they ain’t got that one thing that... that hits them that hard and that true. I got music. You got THIS, the thing you think about all the time, thing that keeps you south of normal. Yeah, makes us great, makes us the best. All we miss out on is everything else - no woman waiting at home after work with a drink and a kiss. That ain’t gonna happen for us. So when it’s over, it’s over.”

House: “You and I have found out that being normal sucks. Because we’re freaks. The advantage of being a freak is that it makes you stronger… But how strong do you really want her to have to be???”

I think the biggest reason why these two quotes really stand out for me is a quote my grandfather shared with his family when my dad and his siblings were growing up… He said “We’re not going to beat each other down in this house… the rest of the world will do more than enough of that all on its own, without our help.”.
I have often wondered over the course of my life… “What’s the point of being strong???” (or, if you prefer, exceptional). For me it’s the ability to adapt, to change with my circumstances rather than be dictated by them. I am very grateful for the person I have turned out to be, but I recognize that trying to be stronger has left a lot of us weaker. Like a person whom exercises more than what their body can recover from, we are breaking down. We all need healing, time to recover, a little release, and a chance to embrace other qualities of life.
Let’s put doing/having more, getting stronger, being better, and fixing things ourselves on hold for a little while and embrace that maybe we’re better off getting some help once in a while (preferably before hitting bottom).
Let’s not beat ourselves or each other up… this world will do enough of that all on it’s own, without our help.
Do something kind for someone today.
Thanks for reading. 😊
