Ode To The City
Missing the cold embrace of The City, Was adrift in a sea of humanity. Found revere in humility, Impoverished circumstances; I made my bed and took my chances. Found comfort in the smallest things, Found God in an alley off 17th and 7th. He was drunkenly ambling with a brick in his hand, He said, “I’m pickin up a weapon, nigga… you better understand.” Yea, though I walk through the valley of death, I fear no man.
For a while, I found love in Mademoiselle’s boudoir, Thought love would get us to Paris… but it didn’t get me very far. Got me roaming the streets at night and sleeping in my car, Got me to divinity, serenity, and more. Found love again in a window seat of a cafe: Long legs, brown eyes, this time love whisked me away From The City where I swore I’d eventually lay. Though the jury’s not in, I may return some day, But my heart and my dreams remain in the Bay.
Endless nights alone, roaming the streets, Countless days walking the same beat. Until my shoes wore thin and blisters burst on my feet. Endless days and nights alone, No family, no friends, no home. Waking up to garbage trucks, meter maids, robbers, and cops, No end in sight. Seems like just yesterday, Sleeping in my car on the street, So far away… every day In The City by the Bay.
Smell the salt water, feel the breeze, Hear the seagulls, smell the redwood trees. God was with me every day, And so was my Mom. There with me still, keeping me from harm, Guiding my path in this life, until it’s my turn to go home. Drive down the coast to the beach, Where oblivion and eternity are always in reach. See the vampires walkin’ through the valley, See the zombies lurking through the alley. Walk the city by day… roll with the throng, I miss my City… I miss my home.
