Summary

The web content is a poignant reflection on the sacrifices and struggles of Vietnam War soldiers, both during and after the conflict.

Abstract

The article titled "Ode to Our Vietnam Soldiers" is a tribute to the brave young men who served in one of the most controversial wars in American history. It highlights the harsh realities they faced, from the brutal conditions of the Vietnamese jungle to the cold reception upon their return home. The poem describes how these soldiers were thrust into a world of "insects and heat and despair," where their youth and freedom were sacrificed for their country's call to duty. Despite their service and the horrors they endured, the veterans found a changed homeland, one that seemed to have moved on without them, leaving them to grapple with their wartime experiences and a society that struggled to understand or acknowledge their contributions.

Opinions

  • The poem conveys a sense of injustice at the treatment of Vietnam veterans, who were expected to seamlessly reintegrate into society despite their traumatic experiences.
  • There is a clear contrast drawn between the soldiers' experiences abroad and the anti-war sentiment prevalent at home, symbolized by "hippies and peace signs."
  • The author seems to lament the loss of innocence and the psychological toll on the soldiers, who had to cope with the memories of a war where killing was commonplace.
  • The poem suggests that the true cost of the war is reflected in the lives of the veterans, who are now reduced to mere names on memorial lists, their individual stories and sacrifices overshadowed by the collective memory of the conflict.
  • It criticizes the lack of a proper welcome and support for the returning soldiers, implying that the nation failed to honor their service adequately.

Their freedom was torn from their youthful lives Brave young men obeyed on command In a war and a world where misery thrives As they learned how to kill a man

For duty to country is what they were taught Yet at home we forgot it exists While young men in hardship obediently fought For our freedom and could not resist

While the jungle inhaled all that was in her lair A war zone of insects and heat and despair Our young men’s lives were put out like flames And are nothing more now than lists of names

What was left of the soldiers that found their way home They found hippies and peace signs in store Expected to blend in like they’d never been gone But the world that they left was no more

They tried to put back all the pieces each day With the memory stuck in their mind Of a world where killing was the accepted way And their welcome back home was unkind
