Summary

The undefined website content introduces "OctoColorFest," a personal initiative by the author to celebrate the vibrant colors of October through photographs, artwork, stories, and poems, as a way to create new memories and overcome melancholy associated with traditional holidays during the pandemic.

Abstract

OctoColorFest is a new celebration proposed by the author to embrace the rich palette of autumn colors, particularly in October. It serves as a creative outlet and a means to uplift spirits during a time when traditional holiday gatherings are less feasible due to the ongoing pandemic. The author encourages contributors to share their colorful creations in various forms, including photography, art, stories, and poetry, tagging them with "Writing Prompt Response" on the Medium platform. Despite the absence of traditional festivities, the author finds solace in the beauty of the season and invites the Weeds & Wildflowers community to partake in this celebration of color and creativity.

Opinions

  • Captain Argentina is acknowledged for choosing a photo that represents the diverse colors of October, diverging from the typical gold and orange hues.
  • The author reminisces about past October activities with family, particularly grandchildren, but now views these memories as bittersweet.
  • There is a sense of loss and change, as the author no longer engages in holiday decorations or participates in events like the Gay Pride Parade and Fall Arts Festival, which were canceled due to the pandemic.
  • The author values the contributions of the Weeds & Wildflowers community and expresses appreciation for each member, despite some being hidden due to a Medium glitch.
  • The initiative is presented as an inclusive and ongoing project without deadlines, emphasizing the importance of community and shared creativity in brightening the season.
  • The author uses the OctoColorFest as a personal coping mechanism and extends the invitation to others as a way to foster connection and positivity during challenging times.

New Month / New Celebration

A new season, a new month, and a new word! What is October if not a riotous collaboration of colors?

Orange, gold, red, yellow, rose!

I was conflicted about which photo to use for this multicolored month, so Captain Argentina took charge and chose this photo of beautiful rose-colored flowers by Dipti Pande. Since October is mostly associated with golds and oranges, it seems fitting to have one of the other autumnal colors represented by our banner. Thank you, Dipti!

Last month, our writing focused on storms, and I received many excellent poems and stories. For October, I want to go lighter and brighter.

October is a month dense with memories for me and most concern my grandchildren, who now live far away. When I think of October and autumn, my mind meanders to school, sports, Halloween, planning the upcoming holidays, and sitting in the cool dark on the porch having deep conversations with grandson.

I remember the afternoon we spent making jack-o’-lanterns at a craft store, the years shopping for costumes, their school’s annual Trunk-or-Treat Halloween event, walking in the annual Gay Pride Parade as a family, and decorating our yard with ghosts, goblins, and pumpkins. All wonderful but bittersweet memories.

I no longer decorate for Halloween — it was “our” thing and so, it shall stay. And, honestly, I’m no longer into Thanksgiving or Christmas either. And, in this Year of Corona, it’s a good thing we won’t be holiday socializing. And, the Gay Pride Parade was another victim of the virus, as was our city’s annual Fall Arts Festival.

So, let’s put holidays and festivals aside and celebrate the hues of October.

Here is a glimpse of my world in autumns past.

Please use the tag Writing Prompt Response and remember that Weeds & Wildflowers prompts have no deadlines or expiration dates.

I am tagging our contributors below. However, there is a strange Medium glitch that hides some writers for publications. You are there, I just can’t see your name on my list. I try to make notes of those who aren’t listed, but I’ve certainly missed some. Please know that if you don’t appear in the tags below, you are included. And, if you would be so kind as to let me know you were omitted, I will add you next month.

And, may I say that I appreciate each and every one of you more than you know ♥
