Musings: Autumn Clean-up, Trash or Treasure, Rainbow Eyes, Silly Pots and Pumpkin Smiles

Creative Expressions: A 52-Week Photography Project | October Edition

Mid-October, autumn clean-up was in full swing. Our closets transitioned, making way for warmer and cozy clothing. Outdoors, the compostable paper yard waste bags were crammed full of leaves that had fallen before Halloween.

At the end of the month, I found solace in organizing my ribbon drawer. A rainbow treasure spared from ending up in the trash. Now, all neatly lined up.

My daughter thought they resembled eyes.

Yes, they certainly do. The panorama of rainbow eyes left both of us mesmerized, each ribbon revealing a curious gaze.

And in the midst, the evil eye emerged. This sign, a protective guardian, reassured me after a month of unexpected events.

In a world that tries to convince you otherwise, remember you are never alone. You are surrounded by love, those who support you.

This is a time of releasing people, places, and things that no longer bring value, no longer contributes positively to your life.

Rainbows are birthed in storms, not in sunshine.M. Dhliwayo

After the storms passed, my drawer was a vibrant tapestry of colours—art woven from the fragments of memories and intertwined ribbons of the past.

Art, in all its forms, whether it is writing, drawing, photography or baking, has a voice that resonates like no other.

Your art is a reflection of your soul. It always speaks the truth, no matter the circumstances and in every situation.

Trash or Treasure?

№.40, trash —

The 5 R’s: Refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose and recycle. Americans throw away 25% more trash during the Thanksgiving to New Year’s holiday period than any other time of year.

Why discard anything after using it just once? A repurposed gift bag, pretty ribbons, and cardboard boxes get a second chance.

Instead of traditional wrapping paper, try cloth wrapping, inspired by the Japanese tradition of Furoshiki.

The gift bag, which cannot be recycled, can be repurposed on multiple occasions, extending its usefulness.

Choose eco-friendly. This blue hydrangea, handpicked from my garden, replaces a non-recyclable bow. The flower can be enjoyed and then disposed of in the compost bin.

Please contribute to waste reduction. Resist throwing away.

Silly Pots

№.41, In my ‘hood, close to home

Tiny pots lined on shelves draw in shoppers curious.

Silly sayings, and clever wordplay, bring forth giggles from the audience in the aisle.

What’s so funny?

  1. Sometimes I wet my plants.
  2. Say aloe to my little friend.
  3. Please don’t die… say both novice and experienced gardeners.

Yes, I’m a succa for love ❤️.

Pumpkin smile or frown?

№.41, In my ‘hood, close to home

Among the decorated aisles of the garden centre, we noticed this pumpkin.

“Mom, that’s the old lady with the disgruntled face. Even the tuft of hair… what’s her name?”

After a quick Google search, the constant frown belonged to none other than Roz from Monsters Inc.

What do you think?:)

№.42, water world

“A fountain is a gathering place where water dances, hearts connect, a small oasis amid a bustling world invites us to pause, reflect, and find peace within.

In a world that’s always rushing, fountains remind us to slow down and appreciate the little joys in life.”

№.43, Sign me up. Interpret that as you will.

I hope you see more rainbows today—I feel like you will. Small rainbows that don’t make much of a sound, but they’re still there! Did you spot any? — Claire Kelly

Sign me up for sunset beach walks a treasure for the senses calming serenity found at the shoreline where seagull wings glint in sunlight tiny crabs scurry from their sandy hideouts.

Here I collect thoughts, admire delicate seashells, beautifully painted rainbow seaweed washed ashore, masterpieces redrawn on a sandy canvas.
