Nurture And Nature: Different Music Styles With Their Emotions
To start: music is an emotional thing.
Nurture
“According to the Cambridge dictionary, nurture means: to take care of, feed, and protect someone or something, especially young children or plants, and help him, her, or it to develop and to help a plan or a person to develop and be successful.”
Nature
“The force that is responsible for physical life and that is sometimes spoken of as a person. The type or main characteristic of something. To be usual and expected. A person’s character.”
When you listen to classical music, you hear a different kind of emotions the composer added to his music. Even in the same piece, there will be different emotions. But each composer has his or her writing style and thus musical style.
There are different style periods within the classical music genre. In each style period, the way musicians from this time played the piece differently because they have also emotional spirit and experience in their life.
When a composer has composed his music he writes down what he has in mind, but also what kind of thoughts he has, what he had experienced and much more. He tries to include his emotions into the music he writes. When he is angry because the government is doing nothing about the corruption in his land, the composer will write his emotions and thoughts through his music. This could be by using dark colors in the music and low strings and maybe slow rhythms. Also, he could use a slow move, thus a slow tempo in the music he writes. Maybe he also put some crescendo and decrescendo a lot in the piece. Mostly when he doesn’t feel great.
As a composer feels happy, he will use some notes and rhythm with happy melodies. This could be a longer note with a point behind with a shorter note after. Also, the composer will use higher notes in the piece. At least, in most music. But what if the composer is sad and happy at the same time? I don’t know about all composers, but I know some of them will compose in a way they feel what they feel and how they feel what they feel. Do you get me?
Music relation between different musicians and the same compositions is difficult to say. But always: musicians play with their heart and their emotions from the bottom of their hearts. Of course, the mood of that day plays a part as well. When people make music they can play together or alone. When they play together, they share the joy of playing together. So, the mood is much better, I guess.
Anyways, the relation between people, the music they play and people who are playing the same music in different styles, has a lot to do with emotions. When a composer has written music to be played in a certain way, the musicians could have another interpretation of the music. Take for example the violin concerto of Tsjaikovski. His only violin concerto. Since he wrote this concerto, many violinists played this concerto and also recorded it. When I listened to this concerto for the first time, I loved it right away. It was played on CD by my sister. But when I listened it played on CD from someone else, I was shocked it played differently. I was a kid, so I didn’t understand, of course, but I realized, the more I listened to the same concerto played by different soloists, they have other interpretations. I was looking up information about the concerto and musicians. Then a lot will get more clear for you. At least, that it was for me. You have to play the concerto intended the composer wants you to play it, but you have your own thoughts with a certain piece of how you think the composer meant it. We only will guess it as some information are not really clear.
So, what is the nurturing thing and what is the natural thing?
I think nurture is that we are taught to be with the intentions of the composer’s meaning of his music. Nature is what we feel when playing music. That is why the same music could be played differently by musicians.
