Nudging Fate In The Right Direction

(My dream came true…then ended in the same day!)

When I was young I didn’t have a clue what I wanted to do when I left school.

I only knew that I’d love to be a professional football (soccer) player.

I played for the school team and was selected to play for Plymouth schoolboys, where people had progressed from there to go on to play for major league teams and even to represent their country playing for England.

I remember receiving the letter telling me I’d been selected and I was just fizzing with joy and excitement. I could see my whole future panned out in front of me. Fame, fortune, doing something I loved. The whole shebang.

Then, that very same day, my Dad came home from work (he was in the army) and told us he was being posted to Catterick in North Yorkshire and that we’d all be moving there in just a few weeks.

What! That was the other end of the country!

And just like that, the same day my dream came true it was taken away from me in an instant.

To say I was totally gutted would have been the understatement of the century.

So we moved up to Yorkshire, where I was again picked to play for the school team. However, then one day fate again took a hand.

As I was walking past the school tennis courts one lunchtime I saw this vision of the most gorgeous beauty, right there playing tennis.

Amazing long red hair. Fantastic figure. Just stunning!

I was totally smitten and from that day on, football took a lowly second place to me wanting to find the courage from somewhere to ask this girl out on a date. But she was WAY out of my league for sure. She was a majors daughter!

I had long hair of my own at that time. Below shoulder length and I fancied myself as something of a hippy. ;-) What would she see in me?

A short time later though, after pacing up and down outside her house for ages, I managed to pluck up the courage to knock on her door and ask her for a date.

She said YES! Holy shit!

We were together and inseparable for 18 months, until fate took a hand again and her father was posted to Northern Ireland.

The love of my life was leaving.

We were separated for many years after that. Decades and different lives. She was always my one true love though.

Still is actually. Because as I write, she is sitting at her desk across the room, here in our office at home and we have been together for 19 years now. Married for 15 years.

Not sure why I just felt like sharing that with you today, except that it shows how life can twist and turn and we never know what may happen next.

If fate hadn’t taken away my dream of becoming a pro football player, I never would have met the love of my life.

But finally getting together after all those years apart had to be something that we both MADE happen.

Giving up our traditional way of earning our money (jobs and high street business) and finding the joy of working for ourselves doing something totally different was something that we both MADE happen.

Moving to a tiny and very beautiful tropical island was something that we both MADE happen.

Sometimes you have to nudge fate in the right direction.

You have to make the first move and so become the designer of your destiny, not just a passive player in life.

Sometimes taking that first move can be the turning point to a whole new way of life for you.

Most people are just coasting and doing work that often drains the soul out of them, or causes them stress and exhaustion. I have helped (and am still helping now) a lot of people in that situation to move towards a life that is far less relentless and allows them to be more true to themselves. Therein lies a fulfilled, contented and happy life. Don’t let your life be something that just happens to you — Create your OWN life instead! Don’t spend the next few years just getting older.

And don’t delay that decision to make a change in your life, or what you do with it from now on.

It’s later than you think. So make that first move.
