Now You Are Dead, What Next?

The answer is not as straightforward as you think

You will die someday!

I bet that isn’t news to you anymore. It is as if all humans have accepted the fact that death is an inevitable part of our existence. Of course, some people are scared of how that death will come, others are even scared of death itself. Some want to fight death by looking for all kinds of cutting-edge medical procedures that delay ageing and prolong life.

The folks with money and a higher degree of obsession with death have resorted to cryogenic freezing.

Just in case you were wondering; cryogenic freezing is just what it sounds like. Some people have chosen to freeze their bodies in subzero temperatures to preserve them until technology that can revive them has been invented. I like to say that cryogenics is the height of hopefulness. Nobody knows for sure if such technology will ever be invented or even how far into the future we’d have to wait. Cryogenics, it’s all about hope as much as it is about science.

Let us make a brief list that demonstrates human ingenuity. since the existence of our species, we have come to accept death as a necessary part of life. We have made unbelievable strides in technology and science. We have been to the moon and back. We have invented treatments for countless diseases, including seemingly incurable ones. We have tamed the seas and wild animals. The list of incredible things we have accomplished is breathtaking. However, despite all our accomplishments, we still have not been able to definitively answer the question of what happens after death.

So, I ask you again today, what really happens after we die? Before you answer this question, read the next paragraphs.

All the religions in the world have different explanations and stories for what comes after death. For all of them, there is an afterlife. However, they all disagree on the nature and place of this afterlife. I won’t be amiss to say that there are as many descriptions of the afterlife as there are religions. I am sure you have a ready answer, but consider that no matter how elegant and coherent your answer is, no matter how much belief you have in your theory about what happens after we die, your neighbour probably has a different theory and believes in it even more strongly than you.

Science has also dabbled into the question of what comes after death because it’s science; it dabbles in everything. So, what does science have to say about what comes after death? Well, the simple answer is NOTHING.

Almighty science can explain to us the physiological changes that occur in our body when we die, but on the issue of what comes next, science has the same degree of knowledge as an infant.

Let’s go back to religion a bit.

Growing up in a Christian evangelical society, I used to be serenaded by colourful stories about people that died and went to heaven. They saw Jesus and the angels in all their glory and then came back to earth with a message and a stronger religious conviction. Others died, went to hell, and were given a second chance to return to earth (always with a message) and make their ways right.

Religion and philosophy have replete explanations for the post-death phenomena. Most times it involves an ‘afterlife’ or ‘life after death’. In these stories, different people have different destinations in the afterlife based on how they lived their lives on earth. But like all things with religion and philosophy, there is no proof, not a single shred of evidence for the many different stories of life after death.

So, I ask you again; what really happens when we die?

Fortunately or not, we are right back to where we began. We don’t know what happens after death. What we have are conjectures at worst or at best, theories. As far as the evidence we have goes, nothing happens after death, we just cease to exist. The best we can do is live a life that is worth emulating while on earth and leave an impact for posterity. The question of what comes after death is important but equally important is the question; when you are no longer here, what will you be remembered for?
