Now That Writers Can No Longer Write Through Medium’s Mobile App
Because the writing feature is no longer available

Since I started writing on Medium in 2020, I found Medium’s mobile app extremely useful. The fact that I could write from my phone was what encouraged me to join the medium partner program in the first place.
Apart from reading, I was happy to write. Whether I was standing or sitting, my writing never stopped.
The spontaneity was also refreshing.
When a new writing idea or topic came to mind, all I had to do was scroll to the medium mobile app, click “write a story” and write. My draft section still has lots of topics that I hope to expand.
After putting down my thoughts, I would then find some time to bring out my laptop to properly edit before publishing. Medium’s mobile app made it easy for me to take writing here seriously. It also encouraged me to write a lot more because I never needed to wait till my laptop was in sight before typing.
I could also correct errors while re-reading unpublished works on my phone.
However, the recent changes on medium have changed so many things. Many writers can no longer write “on the go”.
Yesterday, I was quite disappointed when I opened the medium mobile app and saw that the draft section had disappeared. I actually thought it had disappeared forever until I checked medium’s website and found the section intact. However, it’s no longer possible to write through Medium’s mobile app.
What Medium has written about it
After probing, I came across Medium’s March 15th newsletter where the following was written:
In the coming weeks, we’ll be introducing a series of changes to our Android and iOS apps, focused on a faster, smoother, and more consistent reading experience. The goal with these changes is to help readers discover more authors and topics, and to make it easier for them to read and share stories from their mobile devices. It will also be a significant step forward in creating a more unified and familiar Medium experience across Android, iOS, and our website.
With our focus on an exceptional reading experience, however, we’ve made the difficult decision to remove story editing features from our native apps as well as controls for profile customization. Both of these features will continue to be accessible from our desktop web app.”
I also saw this:
“As of March 2022, Medium IOS and Android Apps no longer support the story editor”
Now that this singular writing feature has been removed from Medium’s mobile app, I wonder what lies ahead.
Personally, it has been such a struggle since this change was made.
What writers should expect
Just like me, I am also sure that writing on the mobile app encouraged so many writers to write faster and better.
I don’t know what Medium’s ultimate plan is, except that the platform has promised to create a more unified and familiar medium experience.
Although I am not too excited about this recent change, I will keep my fingers crossed and see what else Medium has for its writers.
For now, here I am, sitting and writing from my laptop.
