The possible antics by Donald over the next days stretch the wildest of imaginations. Either his phone whacking a passer-by or him twisting the earth from its axis demand to be taken seriously. He is one angry, delusional and now twitter-less monster with supreme powers running amuck. And, a week absent of an American President invites our foes to do their worst. I recall a day in New York starting out brilliantly sunny and carefree but only a few hours later the Twin Towers were gone and thousands dead. We cannot lull ourselves into thinking dreadful things won’t happen because we don’t want them to. Now, placing Donald into a straitjacket until inauguration day has appeal but we are still living in a democracy and besides, that would leave us without a legitimate leader, or even the appearance of one, for the world. But, Donald could be asked, cajoled, tricked or bribed into stepping aside — immediately! A raft with a small sail and a big push can be arranged, surely.

Republicans need to find their cojones and champion the mission ahead of Democrats.

Having Donald as bogeyman in the wings for possibly years ahead will be unpleasant and unhelpful for most Republicans — that is, apart from a few hallucinatory souls like Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley who have the notion that they will feather into the old master’s persona — an exchange perfectly unnoticed by the true Trumper. For a couple of reasons their plans won’t work. The first is that history argues personal magnetism doesn’t transfer well and that ones coming after are likely to disappoint. Isabel Peron was never able to replicate Eva Peron’s clatter of diamond bracelets down her arms, Nicolas Maduro never filled the genuine common man spot of Hugo Chavez and Anthony Eden not the statesmanship of Winston Churchill. Those who did follow successfuly wore the strength of their own person — Johnson after Kennedy and Sadat after Nassar. The other simple reason is that substitutes seldom have the abilities of their popular predecessors. Donald has mastered the confidence-man’s play-box that took a special upbringing not easily duplicated. The efforts of Josh, Ted, and other fantasy pop-up’s will fail because they lack authenticity and ex-Trumpers will either not grip or lose passion quickly. Chances are the real Trump replacement will not look like Trump at all — but may be even more dangerous.

So, what are the downsides of setting Donald adrift? Pretty much none! His ridicule, disloyalty and contempt most Republicans have already experienced, and if not yet — they are likely rounding the corner. The judges are in place and Mitch McConnell seems happy for now. Georgia’s elections have been settled with the help from Donald. In the future, such generosity may not be sought by other states and candidates — for good reasons. Donald’s following, in recent days looking more like a dangerous and uncontrollable mob, comes only with the man himself and all the unpredictability of a dog without a tail.

The upsides to all this however are enormous should the Republicans only rattle their heads and have courage. They would get to redirect a party that’s gone awry and appeal to a new bunch of patriots — whether they be young, latin or even black. Republicans are currently channeling a path of narrowing interest and relevance. For all our sakes we need a constructive counter to Democrats — and not a Republican black hole.
