You may be thinking that you’re not going to be making money on the platform, so what’s the deal — why stay?

There are many more reasons to stay on Medium other than an immediate cash payout.

You’ll benefit from three things on Medium if you do it in a focused way.

• You can build a following and community on Medium by networking with other writers and readers.
• You can build a writing habit on Medium and consistently get better over time by improving your writing
• You can experiment and figure out what type of writing, what type of genre, and what type of topics you’re good at writing.

Medium is a grand opportunity that allows the writer to come in with very little investment or setup and benefit from the platform. You come in with thoughts and ideas and you can test it on Medium.

Don’t do it for the pennies

It’s not all about the money, friends.

When I was hustling on Medium after quitting my day job, it was a real stressor. I was writing on Medium like a full-time job and although my earnings were creeping up into the four figures, it wasn’t sustainable. I felt a lot of pressure and stress for those earnings to continue as they were.

Work a day job for money. Get a side gig for money. Start your own money-making blog for money. Sell a product for the money.

The healthiest way to do Medium is to not depend on Medium for your livelihood. Don’t depend on Medium to pay for your groceries. Or even to buy you a cup of coffee (Sign up for Ko-Fi for that!)

Medium can be fickle and has a group of strategists who run this platform who are taking Medium where they want it to go. Where Medium is going might not be where you want to go so forget about Medium as a money-making venture.

Treat Medium as an art — where you grow as a writer, build your writing credibility, and take your skills onto your next platform or creative outlet.

Think of Medium as a springboard, a platform for your next writing ventures.

With all the top writers threatening to leave or already having leaving left, there is plenty of room for you to grow. There is a place for you on Medium.
