Noticing

Seeing the invisible!

There are other patterns in our lives we seldom notice — patterns that are invisible to the outside world, yet that come through in everything we do. These patterns exist in what we think and how we think. These patterns come out of our very being.

In discussing these invisible patterns, let me introduce another fundamental concept. We have mentioned it in past posts — the act of noticing.

To notice is to use your senses to become aware of something. Noticing is the result of intentionally focusing your attention in the present moment. What you focus your attention on can be out there in the physical world, or it can be in your mental or emotional worlds.

In other words, noticing is pausing and “looking” at something you normally allow to pass by, something you wouldn’t normally perceive. Noticing means seeing what may normally invisible to you.

Here’s a great question to ask yourself to help you discern things you have not seen before:

What do I notice about __________?

For example:

· What do I notice about the way he said that?

· What do I notice about the feelings I’m having about this?

· What do I notice about the way people work at my company?

· What do I notice about how I act around my boss/subordinates/colleagues?

· What do I notice about my recent life?

· What do I notice about the pattern of sleep in my life and how it affects my mood?

· What do I notice about the foods I crave?

· What do I notice about how my wife and I interact?

· What do I notice about how I act at work versus at home?

This simple, yet powerful, question can uncover your thoughts and bring hidden reality to light. Think about something important in your life and ask yourself the question now.

After asking each “What do I notice?” question, look for an underlying pattern. Name the pattern and think about the effect it is having on your life.
