Nothing More than a Nodding Lizard
A poem about being God walking along a sandy path in Big Sur

I was God today Walking along a path On the coast of Big Sur. The sun was on its way to rest;
The fog awaiting its turn; And the lizards soaked up The living rays To keep from becoming stone.
Until they heard my step And saw my shadow And off they would race along, Scurrying bow-legged down the sandy trail.
But I kept coming And off into the cold, stony shadows Of the poison oak and the stinging nettles They plunged.
Except for one. This blue-bellied beast Just stopped And waited.
And when I came It looked up And nodded And gave me an audacious wink And I believe a smile.
Yes, I was God today And tomorrow Just maybe Nothing more than a nodding lizard…
Looking up with a wink And a smile.
