Not Seeing the Gorilla
Trying to stay connected
When I was a kid I was fascinated by wild animals from around the world. I was especially enthralled with gorillas. I fantasized about being a gorilla roaming through the jungle with my fellow gorillas. To me, it seemed that the life of a gorilla was so peaceful and joyous. Between humans and gorillas it appeared that gorillas were the happier of the two primates.
I figured that it was because gorillas had not lost their intimate connection to nature. I would go outside but instead of playing with other kids I snuck off into the forest beyond the neighborhood. There were several places in the forest that I visited regularly. Being in those spots I saw no evidence of humankind. I was completely surrounded by nature.
I would stop walking and sit on a log or a rock and just FEEL the intense energy. Looking up at the forest canopy I imagined being a gorilla looking up at the forest trees. While I spent a few hours a week in the forest, gorillas spent their entire lives in their forests. They could FEEL that energy all the time. How splendid that must be!
I have been a nature freak all my life but there have been many times when I have gotten completely sucked into the manufactured world of humans and, like other humans, became thoroughly disconnected from nature; from that energy.
We are part of nature, part of this magnificent planet and that supreme energy that we have become disconnected from is something that nourishes us, feeds us, heals us, rejuvenates us, and empowers us.
So many humans spend almost all of their time indoors. And on the few occasions when they go outdoors they remain oblivious to the giant gorilla in our midst. They go straight to their cars and immediately turn on the radio. If they are walking they have earbuds in their ears and cannot hear the birdsong and other sounds of nature. Their attention is on their phones as their opposable thumbs scroll non-stop, sucking their attention away from the natural world around them. They barely even notice nature much less immerse themselves in it to the point where they can FEEL that incredible energy and tap into it.
It is so easy to not see and ignore that giant gorilla in our midst that is nature. The more disconnected we become, the more we forget about that phenomenal energy that we are part of. Our ability to FEEL shuts down and we look for energy in the ephemera of our manufactured world.
Our manufactured world seems to be overtaking the natural world but there is still plenty of nature left no matter where we live. It can be found even in a city. We can find it and rebuild our connection to it.
Luckily for me, the town in which I live has a few parks and even a nature hiking trail following a small creek at the edge of town. That is where I will be headed today. I have packed a picnic. I know of a certain spot within the small ribbon of forest flanking the creek where I can go and be completely immersed in nature. It is a place where I can fully recharge.
It will just be me and the gorilla.
