Not Making Money as a DoorDash Driver in Your State? Consider Driving to Another State.
I’m not gonna lie, it’s been very difficult to make a buck on the DoorDash platform lately. There’s three reasons for this:
Oversaturation of drivers
DoorDash pay keeps going down
Customers don’t tip as much, or even at all, due to the economy
For that reason, an increasing number of Dashers are considering living in their car to save on expenses and drive to other states that may be more lucrative.
As a DoorDash driver, you can choose to work anywhere, as long as:
DoorDash runs there
It is in your country of residence
This means when you drive for this platform, you aren’t limited to the state or city you signed up in or live in. You are free to dash along the way while traveling around the country — you don’t need to ask your supervisor, manager, or boss to transfer you from one location to another if you abruptly make the choice to move to a new location.
As a matter of fact, this Dasher lives in Las Vegas and things were slow, so he decided to live in his car and go to California to dash. Watch the video:

It’s possible to dash using an out-of-state license, and there aren’t any rules on DoorDash concerning how frequently you can dash within another state — it’s okay to move states as frequently as you want.
That level of freedom is among the best benefits of self-employment: it’s possible to choose how, where, and when you work. While you won’t have full control over each one of those variables (for example, you cannot dash in Portugal), you have a lot more flexibility than you might while working at most other types of jobs.
The company presently runs in all 50 states, Japan, Australia, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Washington D.C.. Even with the limitations that you cannot dash outside of your country, that is quite a few locations to select from.
Therefore, why would anyone want to dash in several states? If you are on vacation, it’s possible to dash between trips to the ocean. Or if you are living the nomadic life, it’s possible to plan a route around cities with DoorDash in order for you to earn while traveling.
If you’re looking to dash around the country, below are 5 tips to make that time the best it can be.
Ensure that you meet all auto insurance requirements
The requirements needed to sign up for the platform are minimal; however, one of the requirements is that you’ll have to have auto insurance, meeting at least the minimum requirements of your state.
If you drive in another state, you might have to have insurance meeting the legal requirements in that particular state to conduct business there. A lot of states have requirements that are similar; therefore, you might already have what’s needed; however, just make sure that you check before dashing.
Also, it’s a good idea that you check with your auto insurance provider to ensure that you will remain covered if you drive across state lines.
Plus, any business moving goods or people across state lines must have commercial auto coverage, according to federal law. As a DoorDash driver, you are running a business, and if you drive in a city that is on a state border, that might apply to you.
When it comes to taxes, each state has a different set of laws. Sometimes, driving in another state might require that you file an income tax return in your home state and that particular state.
Tax laws vary from one state to another and are very complex; therefore, there isn’t any easy answer as to whether that’ll apply to you. The best thing you can do is contact a tax professional in order for you to ensure that you don’t wind up evading your taxes, unintentionally. Plus, make sure that you take notes regarding when and where you drove for DoorDash — one of DoorDash’s partners, Stride, has an app that can help you with that.
When it comes to where you can work, the platform provides a ton of flexibility; however, you do not have full freedom — though moving from the United States to Japan and driving there might be a dream for some people, it isn’t allowed.
Thankfully, it’s possible to dash anywhere the platform operates inside your home country; therefore, there’s still lots of flexibility. In the U.S. the platform works in all 50 states, in addition to Washington, DC and Puerto Rico. In Japan, Australia, and Canada, their operations are more restricted.
If you are accustomed to dashing in LA or New York City and try your hand at dashing within a smaller place such as Apple Valley, Minnesota, you might find that you are spending more time sitting around waiting on orders to pop up. Also, pay rates may be affected — you might see that the average base pay is lower or higher in one place, as compared to another.
If you are driving for DoorDash in another state because you will be there regardless (for example, if on vacation), that isn’t a big problem. However, if you are driving in another state as a part of a consistent routine, it might impact your income.
On the other hand, occasionally driving to another city might increase your income because of an increase in demand. Just ensure that you factor in the extra mileage, risk of accidents, wear and tear, and price of gasoline from the increased amount of driving while choosing to drive in another state for that reason.
Gasoline can be expensive, and costs may vary wildly from one state to another. Even getting gasoline directly across the border may have a huge impact on your pocketbook: neighboring states Illinois and Indiana have average gasoline costs of $3.613 and $4.021, respectively, as of Sept. 6th, 2023.
If you are going to be driving for DoorDash in another state, check on the price of gas and prepare a plan for where you will fill up ahead of time. Plus, do not forget to take advantage of the Gas Rewards program offered by DoorDash to receive two percent cash back on gasoline purchases that are made with the DasherDirect card.
Getting set up to drive for DoorDash in another state is simple. Since the platform uses the GPS on your phone to find you, all that’s needed is to head to the area you want to drive in, and push “Schedule a Dash,” or “Dash Now.” When you complete that, a pop-up appears and asks if you’re looking to change your location. Push confirm, and you are all set!
If these options don’t appear, you will need to either wait until they become available, or you will need to move to some other zone in which they are presently available.
Remember, sometimes it might take a minute for DoorDash’s app to register the new location.
Get started driving for DoorDash
