The author, Orla Kenny, shares a personal narrative about the difficulty of allowing oneself to rest when there are tasks at hand. Despite initial frustration, the author learns to acknowledge and respect the body's signals, opting for a more relaxed approach to the day's activities. The piece emphasizes the importance of mental and emotional rest, which can be as exhaustive as physical exertion. It concludes with a message of self-kindness, encouraging readers to take a break when needed, symbolized by having another cup of tea.

No matter how much

I say it’s okay to do nothing,

it doesn’t come easy.

And I’m one of the

less productive ones.

I can allow myself

to rest,

but when there are things

I want

or need to do,

it’s annoying when

my body doesn’t

want to join me.

“Come on.”

“Let’s do it!” I say.

“No way!”

“Not today.”

It’s just not gonna work.

She’s not responding to it.

After a while, I say to my body..

“Good for you.”

“You’re right.”

“I can change things around.”

“There’s no urgent appointments today.”

“We can do some things

in a lazy kinda way.”

“Yea, yea!”

— body says

“Relax!”

“Take a chill pill.”

“Everything’s going to be okay.”

“Have another cup of tea!”

It’s interesting because this started a few days ago and I thought I’d be all guns blazing today, but no, she’s not ready.

My body is on strike.

But, I’ve developed a good relationship with my body over the years. I do listen to it, but occasionally, I don’t see this coming.

I think it’s because, in my mind, I don’t expect to be tired when I’m not physically very active.

But, mental and emotional thinking can be draining too.

So, I’m okay to do the minimal today.

If you get a day when you’re feeling like you need a rest, just be kind to yourself and relax. 💗☕
