Not Deciding is a Decision

And it could be one of the worst

We’ve all been there — at the fork in the road, faced with a difficult choice to make. Sometimes, it’s a particularly gnarly fork. The type with far too many prongs. Which path do we take forward? The answer is never clear. That’s why it’s a hard decision — duh.

Instead of rolling up our sleeves to get down and dirty with the decision making, we plop ourselves down and just stare the options. Maybe we can avoid having to analyze the situation. Perhaps this colossal mess will just disappear into thin air. And then we can just move forward like it didn’t exist.

But that never happens. It turns out, difficult decisions in life are a lot like multiple choice questions. There are lots of options to choose, all of which seem equally bad, yet equally good.

And there’s a “none” option. Out of all the opportunities in life to be honest, we choose the moments of adversity. “None” will bail us out of this sticky situation. But maybe you should think twice and double check your answers. This could be a trick question and you just fell into the trap.

You’ll never be 100% right

A large part of the reason why you’re stuck in indecisive land is because you’re trying to make the right decision — the 100% right decision. But, I’ll save you the trouble. That option doesn’t exist — someone forgot to add it to the list. Oops.

In fact, that option basically never existed, never exists, and will never exist. Bits of life are a zero-sum game and difficult decision making falls into this category.

When you make a decision, you chose which way the wind blows. That means the leaves get wafted off of one person’s lawn, but onto another’s. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. It’s no big deal, really. The quicker you recognize that, the quicker you can move forward.

You’ll also never be 100% wrong

The best part is, there’s also no such thing as a completely bad or wrong choice. Maybe that’s a given. We humans do have a reputation for being glass-half-empty kind of creatures.

But it’s a nice reminder to stow away. Sort of like a crumpled, forgotten fortune cookie slip you find in your pocket on a bad day. A little burst of airy inspiration that we all know in theory, but probably take for granted.

If you’re bummed that you can’t be completely right, at least you can celebrate that you’ll likely never be totally wrong.

The world won’t wait

While you sit there, basking in self-pity over having to make a tough call — the rest of the world is moving forward. Don’t get it twisted though — you’re not the only one at a fork in the road.

Everyone else is weighing their options and making choices. They are accepting that there will be inevitable challenges. They are using their time to iron out the ruffles. And probably, they are celebrating the little wins that come with their choices.

Indecision is a giant waste of time. I’m not saying that you need to make a decision quickly. Hard decisions actually need a lot of thought and consideration. But letting time pass while you actively do nothing is not exactly a smart move.

Eventually, life will choose for you

You can stall for time and blame it on the complex situation. But the universe is an intricately intertwined thing. Eventually, your decision to do nothing is going get in someone else’s way. Your pit stop becomes someone else’s roadblock. And if you don’t get moving or have a darned good reason for being there, someone’s going to move you out of their way.

By this point, you’ll have no choice but to go with someone else’s choice. This means, dealing with the consequences and challenges of that decision — one you didn’t make. You won’t get to think about how equipped you are to handle what’s next. You will have no time to prepare for what’s to come.

Making a decision isn’t easy. Especially the tough ones — those are usually the messiest. You’re going to have to be ready and willing to put in some work. The options will tug you in opposing directions and stretch you thin. There will seemingly be a million factors to consider. And none of those will be easy to compare or contrast.

But don’t throw your hands up in despair and call it quits. Accept that you can’t make the perfect move, but also remember that can’t exactly fail. No one’s going to wait for you while you twiddle your thumbs and avoid the situation. Eventually the world moves, shifts, and realigns and you’re going to get in the way. You’re better off moving forward with a decision.
