Non-Members Viewers after the New Medium Partner Program
Why my earnings decrease after August 2023
Since August, Medium has introduced revisions to its Partner Program. The goal is to pursue high quality human writing. To do so, Medium is changing the following points:
- Prioritizing Quality over Quantity: Unlike many other content platforms that favor superficial clickbait, Medium rewards the significance of well-crafted, insightful content that enriches readers’ lives.
- Recognizing Engagement: In the updated Partner Program, Medium acknowledges the influence of reader engagement and nurtures a dynamic ecosystem where writers are acknowledged based on the depth of their interactions with readers.
- Introducing More Meaningful Metrics for Earnings: In addition to member read/listening time, which remains a primary factor, engagement indicators such as claps, highlights, replies, and follows now contribute to earnings. However, only the initial instance of each engagement by a reader is considered in earnings. Medium’s aim is to identify and reward story quality by transcending mere attention-grabbing metrics. Stories that ignite discussions and inspire meaningful interactions with readers are regarded as indicators of high quality and are rewarded accordingly.
- Promoting Stories for Enhanced Exposure: Medium has introduced a Boost feature that offers both distribution and earnings bonuses for stories that meet specific quality criteria. Any story, regardless of the number of followers or topic category, is eligible for Boost. This feature is designed to motivate authors to write meaningful, original, and constructive stories based on personal experiences.
- Adapting Earnings Based on Read Ratio: Medium is discouraging clickbait content by adjusting earnings based on read ratio. The read ratio is calculated by dividing the number of people who read a story for 30 seconds or more by the total number of views. Stories with higher read ratios indicate that the title and preview accurately represent the content, while lower read ratios suggest clickbait or misleading titles. Medium aims to reward stories that deliver on reader expectations and provide valuable content. By adjusting earnings based on read ratio, Medium ensures that writers are incentivized to create engaging and honest content that resonates with their audience.
- Augmented Earnings for Followers’ Engagement: Medium recognizes the significance of the bond between writers and their followers. Stories read by existing followers now earn an additional bonus in earnings. This approach aims to encourage writers to establish meaningful connections with their readers, resulting in more nuanced stories and deeper discussions. Medium has also implemented a distribution boost for stories from people you follow, increasing the chances of your stories being seen by those who follow you.
My complaint about the new Partner Program
From my point of view, the main problem of new Partner Program is the fact that external views are not considered for earnings. As an example, let’s consider two of my articles:
These articles gather several external views, but members traffic was never be so high. As a result, monthly earnings for these articles have decrease almost to 0$. Let's see some examples:
Earnings for May
Below, earnings and viewers for the two articles are shown. As it may be seen, the first article got 229 viewers (222 were non-member viewers) and 0.74$, while the second one got 72 viewers (68 non-member viewers) and 0.54$.

Earnings for September
The first one was visited by 155 non-member users in September, but only 5 $ cents were earned, while the second article was visited by 30 non-member users and earn nothing. Although the viewers decrease, earnings decrease was deeper due to the new Partner Program, which doesn’t considers non-member visits to compute earnings.

Final thoughts
These results show how some articles are attracting traffic to the Medium website (some of them will join as a members) but they are not compensated. Therefore, although the new Program is good to pursue quality articles, I think that the previous Partner Program was better for writers who were able to generate traffic from other sites (Google, social networks, etc).
And you? Do you have articles whose viewers are mostly non-members? What do you think about the new Medium Partner Program? Should the consider non-member users to compute earnings? Write a comment to express your opinion!
